Brave password system

I’m having a problem. I would like to export my passwords, but I can’t remember my Windows password (actually, I’m the only one who uses my computer, and I have set up an autologon).

I can change or delete my current password using a bootable key with software designed for this purpose.

I am on Windows 10 with a local account.
windows 10 22H2
build 19045.5965

The last time I tried to change my Windows password, I lost all my passwords saved on Brave.

How can I prevent this from happening again and keep my current passwords?

To clarify, you have no way of figuring out what you system password is before you change it?

I’ve searched on the windows credential tools but my password isn’t displayed. So i don’t know how to view it.
So the answer is YES

Honestly there’s not we can do for you here. You need your system password to do what you want and if I’m being honest, you might want to look for an alternative to whatever the tool is you’re using to generate your passwords since you can’t actually find the password being used.

While I can’t exactly recommend this given there are risks involved, there is some system trickery you can use to reset your System password. For example:

But again, this is a “try at your own risk” type of situation.

I think there is a mistake here, I can easily remove or reset my windows password but I NEED TO KNOW if i do that did my brave recorded password will be erased/lost or not ?
If not can i just backup all my brave profil data to restore it after i change my windows password ?

You are not going to hurt anything by - now - creating a backup of the User Data folder:

  • C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\

I would place the backup on an external USB drive aka “USB flash drive.”

Recovering passwords per website

There is a possibility of recovering the password that you used to log on to a website. Search for “How to . . .” results, by using online search criteria, for example: recover password used to log on to website

Example result: ‘https://umatechnology.org/how-to-recover-forgotten-passwords-from-web-browsers/

Given your status, now is the time to work at creating a list of those username-and-password combinations. I would manually write those down, in addition to using an alternate password manager (as extra storage) ← you might choose to use the Firefox Internet browser, mentioned at the link.

So you can rebuild ← prepare for that, “just in case.”

If you change the system password it shouldn’t delete any of your stored Brave data (including passwords) but there have been cases where that has happened. So before you do, I would recommend exporting your passwords from Brave in addition to making a backup of your User data folder so you have everything backed up before you make the change.

@Mattches but I CAN’T export password using the brave option cuz it prompt me to insert the windows password when i try to use this option. So if i manually backup all data file did the password will be backed up at the same time and will be restorable ?

If you said that you’ve done this before and that your password data was lost then that will likely happen again. This is because the OS password is used to decrypt the password data in the browser – more information on that here:

In general, I would highly recommend changing your Windows login to something you can remember and input yourself rather than whatever automated system you’re using now. I suspect this will not be the only time or the only application in which this particular method causes an issue.
