Brave crashing after updating brave://flags

I followed the directions on this site and changed Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents from ‘Default’ to ‘Enabled’: https://www.howtogeek.com/798929/brave-forced-dark-mode/

After I updated brave://flags Brave crashed and will not reopen. I am getting the following error on my macOS: You can’t open the application “Brave Browser” because it may be damaged or incomplete.

Any idea on how to restore without losing my data/bookmarks? I have multiple profiles.

Brave Version 105.1.43.93
OS: macOS Big Sur

I use the same flag on all my browsers (brave or other) on all my devices, it never crashed on me.

I think that an extension might have interfered with the setup, like Dark Reader extension. As Dark reader and this flag somewhat do the same job, so it might have caused this problem.

Some other users might be able to help.

  1. Open Finder
  2. Select Go and then Go to Folder
  3. enter var/folders
  4. Inside “folders” are several subfolders, each with a two-character name. Drag all the subfolders except the one named zz to the Trash. Don’t delete the subfolder named zz. You’ll be prompted for your administrator login credentials.
  5. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

The above I read on a post where they got the same error as you.

Also, what @chh_68 mentioned could be right.

I only have two subfolders at private/var/folders, dh and zz. When I drag dh to the trash nothing happens it remains in the folder (assuming that the folder cannot be deleted).

Here is what the Brave App looks like, no logo.

is there a way to remove my extensions using my terminal or something? I’m unable to open Brave as it gives me the aforementioned error. Curious if that is a way to fix this issue…

@michal could you take a look into this, thanks!

Michael is iOS guy.

Above user is on Linux.

Well, he says Mac OS in the post he created…

My bad, missed it, read /var so I thought he was linux.

Still as far as I know, Micahel only deals with iOS and webkit issues.

Umm well, I guess since he’s acquainted with IOS, he could help with MacOS as well… Let’s see if he replies

Yes, I have macOS not iOS. I’ll take any help I can get

Hello @pm04, sorry to hear that. If the issue persists, please go to brave://crashes and send the crash report, once you send it please provide the crash ID here in order to further investigate. Regards.
