Brave browser is taking about 70GB of RAM for me, sometimes more

Description of the issue:

Brave Browser takes over 70GB of ram in a lot of occasions

sometimes getting the ram usage to over 90 percent while the ram capacity in my pc is 96GB

I have a lot of opened tabs but most of them are inactive yet when I look task manager

most of the inactive ones are taking over 2gb of ram each while others are taking just a few MB

so I was wondering about why it’s so high for these inactive tabs and not the others, if this is a bug, or a memory leak, and how to fix it if someone could help me with the information about that.

as 70GB of ram is way more than a lot sadly especially that it happens everyday without understanding why or how to fix it

thank you a lot for reading about my issue, and if any more information or screenshot is needed, I’m always happy to send them ofc.

What extensions/websites are you using/displaying? Having 2G per process seems unusual.

The fact that you have more than 70GB of RAM on your PC is awesome man.

btw, are you crypto mining via extension by any chance? if not.. I suggest, install uBlock Origin on Brave.

Settings > Extension > Manifest V2 extensions > Enable uBlock Origin.

bad suggestion, another extension won’t fix this

I do have memory saver on sadly

I’m not mining anything on my computer at all, I also do have uBlock Origin

These are all of my enabled extensions

Well, it’s better than have no suggestion at all. :man_shrugging:

I suspected it might be related to crypto mining. So, adding a blocking script in uBlock Origin is a good way to troubleshoot and see if that resolves the issue. I mean, “Cryptojacking”.

What is your suggestion then? fanboy

@mike6

“BB” > Brave Browser

What I would do, in the following order:

Disable BB setting: Continue where you left off

Disable and Remove Extensions:

  • BlockSite Block Websites & Stay Focused
  • Return Youtube Dislike
  • uBlock Origin
  • All Translate services but 1 - use only 1 Translate extension
  • All VPN services but 1 - use only 1 VPN Service

In a BB New Window, go to: brave://settings/clearBrowserData

Set “Time range” to “All time” and clear data:

  • Basic tab > ENABLE Browsing history
  • Basic tab > ENABLE Cached images and files

Click Delete data button.

Exit / Quit BB; and Restart computer. Test issue.

is there any way to save my browser data as a backup before clearing it?

as I’m truly worried to clear something important or something I might not be able to get back as I haven’t cleared my browsing data for probably 2 years or more.

@mike6

Store backups at safe locations that are NOT within any browser installation path.

“BB” = Brave Browser

In a BB New Window, go to brave://version and scroll down to Profile Path ← thereby knowing for certain where the User Data folder is for Windows OS users.

Backups:

  • BB Bookmarks > export result: “bookmarks.html” file
  • Export passwords to CSV file
  • User Data folder

I would typically create a .zip compression of each those files and the folder. Using chronological names (examples):

  • 20250618_BB_Bookmarks.zip
  • 20250619_BB_Bookmarks.zip
  • 20250618_BB_Passwords_CSV.zip
  • 20250619_BB_Passwords_CSV.zip
  • 20250618_BB_User_Data_FLDR.zip
  • 20250619_BB_User_Data_FLDR.zip

And place the backups in at least 2 different locations ← at least one of which, is an external drive.

I would test in a clean Brave Beta/Nightly profile, no extensions. and re-test

I think something may have changed in memory management indeed because I have noticed an increase in memory consumption myself, even though I have a memory saver enabled and usually I only have 4-5 tabs open and it takes over 3-4GB of RAM so roughly it’s like up to 1 GB per tab, if you say you have many of them open that depends a lot on “how many” do you mean exactly, if it’s like 50 tabs well then maybe.

Did you try to set it to Maximum? Just to monitor if there’s any improvement if you instruct Brave to free up RAM in shorter periods.

I am having the same issue. I will have 1 window open and task manager will show brave with anywhere from 21 to 60+ windows open. Locks up my laptop and I cannot do anything.
In task manager it will show 100% of cpu and 90+% of memory being used by brave
