Brave Browser Download Incompatible with Windows 11
Is there a workaround?
I have downloaded Brave (the version that this website suggests you download for Windows) on my new Dell computer and when I try to open the app a little white window pops up for the briefest moment of time and then automatically closes.
I have checked the firewalls and antivirus apps on my computer and they both allow Brave to open.
I tried going into the Brave āpropertiesā and renaming the end of the Target field with āādisable-gpuā to no avail.
I tried Brave Nightly and Brave Beta and they still have the same problems.
I tried downloading Brave directly from the Microsoft Store.
I tried restarting my computer, and unistalling and reinstalling Brave.
I tried running the troubleshoot on Brave and changing system settings within the app and it still doesnāt work.
I really want to use Brave- does anyone know how to fix this?
@aprettylemon,
Thanks for letting us know.
Not entirely sure what the issue here would be ā can you please share the exact Win 11 version youāre using (youāll find this in Windows by going to Settings --> System --> About)?
Additionally, I know that you said you set your AV programs to allow Brave to install but have you tried temporarily disabling them and then attempting the install?
Hi @Mattches, Iām using Windows 11 Pro - Version 21H2
I have now tried disabling all my antivirus programs, restarting my computer, and downloading and installing Brave. Same problem as before
I double click on the Brave App, a popup now shows up asking if I want to let Brave make changes to the harddrive on my computer, I click yes, and then a window briefly pops up and then is forced to close.
21H2 ā isnāt that quite out of date and no longer being serviced now? Isnāt there an option to get to 24H2?
That might be a good place to start, keeping up to date with updates helps with security too.
Brave is having compatibility issues with Windows 11. Try updating your graphics drivers and running Brave as an administrator. Also, try launching Brave with the --disable-software-rasterizer flag, and check the compatibility mode in the properties. Clearing the user data folder can sometimes fix the problem as well. If the issue persists, check the Event Viewer for error logs or consider submitting a bug report.
Hi @sajjad1122, how do I update graphics drivers? Sorry Iām not a super tech savvy person
Also, how do I launch Brave with that flag you mentioned?
As to the compatibility mode, every time I open āpropertiesā by right clicking on the Brave app, and go to āCompatibilityā it just gives me the option of running the program as if it were on a Windows 8 system, or Windows 7, or one of the updates even further back than those two. Iām not sure why it doesnāt give me the option to run it on a Windows 11 or 10 operating system.
Thanks for your suggestions!
@aprettylemon random question out of nowhere, but do you have anything like Razer Cortex running on your device? The long and short of what Iām getting at is long ago I was playing games like SWTOR and when trying to launch, it would ācrashā the browser. But no crash reports were being made. After investigating, I found Razer Cortex was closing Brave as part of its System Booster feature. It doesnāt necessarily have to be the same exact thing, but I guess wondering if you could have any sort of app/program on your PC that might be doing something of the sort.
Beyond that, could you try to boot up in safe mode and see if Brave would open on it?
Thanks for the advice! I donāt have Razer Cortex, so it canāt be that, but I will check about it possibly being other apps doing the same thing, good idea
@aprettylemon running in safe mode just was to help narrow things down a bit.
Safe Mode runs your computer with only the essential system processes, which disables most third-party programs and extra services. Since Brave opened without issues in Safe Mode, this suggests the issue isnāt with the browser itself but could be related to other software running in the background. Iād recommend taking another look at what might be running on your deviceālike any security software, performance boosters, or other background appsāthat could interfere with Brave. Disabling these one by one might help pinpoint the cause.
Typically safe mode is just something you use when thinking might have a virus, malware, or some program causing big issues. Booting this way can help bypass anything that was causing issues. Of course, this also means it typically boots without any network adapters active. You could try booting in safe mode with networking which is another option, but this was indeed meant to be more of a temporary fix as you mentioned. So itās not worth getting into much detail on it.
Hi everyone! I followed the instructions on this Youtube video and that fixed my problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h8L27vFNWI&t=46s
However, Iām not really sure what I didā¦ I just did exactly what the guy in the video showed, soā¦ hopefully it didnāt mess anything up on my computer. Oh well. Iām just super excited Brave no longer crashes as soon as I open it.
Thank you all for your suggestions and willingness to help me!
