Brave browser can’t play live streams

Brave browser can’t play live streams from these websites:
http://www.dazn.com and http://www.wowtv.de
(German paid sports portals)

Widevine is enabled:

All my other browsers display the content correctly: Opera, Edge, Firefox, Safari.

What can I do? If the stream providers don’t support the Brave Browser, why don’t they? I don’t understand … :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Thanks.

Fiddle with Brave Shields settings.

In general usage, adjusting the Brave Shields - tuning them - per some website (among various websites), is to be expected.

Sometimes, that is a bit of a chore and/or frustrating (requires experimentation), but some determination is required (IMHO) to soldier thru the struggle for security in the face of demands for convenience.

@tit700 how so? It’s generally helpful if you can provide a lot more details. Such as when you try to play, do they never load? Does it give you any error messages? Screenshots and/or as much detailed description as possible is very helpful.

In addition:

  • Which version of Brave are you using?
  • Which specific version of Windows are you using?
  • Have you tried with Shields off?
  • Are you using any extensions?
  • Any attempt to play in a private window?
  • Have you attempted in a new profile?

No such thing as anyone not supporting Brave, really. If it works on Chrome then it will work on Brave. Sometimes they’ll try to block the browser but then teams make adjustments to Shields and all to get past that.

Often when websites show specific browsers that are supported, it’s more of a reference that they are the web browsers that they have tested on and they are sure will work. This testing is usually limited to the main browsers which are Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

I don’t understand this forum. My replies don’t show up or they disappear. So if you end up reading everything three times, just take it easy :sunglasses:

First of all, thank you so much for your help!

Screen1 shows a black screen after starting the stream. After about a minute, Screen2 appears: the start screen of the stream with a constantly spinning circle in the middle.

Brave Browser is up to date (and freshly installed). Version 1.71.114 Chromium: 130.0.6723.58 (Official Build) (64-bit).

I’m using Windows 10 Pro on a desktop PC, Version 22H2, OS Build 19045.5011, Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19060.1000.0.

I’ve tried completely disabling Shields as a test, but no change — the stream still doesn’t work.

I’m not using any extensions, except the pre-installed “SponsorBlock for YouTube.”

I tried starting the stream in a private window — both with and without TOR: no success.

I added a new profile, and what can I say? The live stream works! That’s wonderful! :grinning:

I have to admit I haven’t been using Brave Browser for long. I modified it as recommended in many YouTube videos. It’s possible I enabled a setting that’s blocking streaming videos. But how do I figure that out? Obviously, the attempts mentioned above (like turning off Shields) weren’t successful.

What setting might I have accidentally enabled or disabled? Of course, I could compare the settings between the old and new profiles, but forgive my laziness—that’s really tedious with the endless number of options. In the end, I’ll probably have to do it, I’m afraid. Unless you have the ultimate solution for me :innocent:

Thank you very much!

I’m sorry that I can’t answer you. My detailed post was moved to the spam folder of this forum. The administrators don’t care much about that and won’t publish it.

Glad to hear it resolves in a new profile. I wouldn’t be quite sure what is happening in your old profile to be causing issues. If it was anything like Widevine then it would typically have displayed some sort of error message trying to encourage you to use Widevine or DRM.

Generally speaking, the differences on new profile are:

  • Majority of settings (except for custom filters and changes to `brave://flags) are set to default
  • There are no old cookies, as it’s starting fresh
  • No extensions are installed

The overwhelming majority of the time it comes down to extensions. And I’m not sure what you mean about “pre-installed.” To be specific, it’s not part of Brave so want to make sure you’re saying you intentionally installed from wherever. It could potentially be causing an issue as I know I’ve seen others pinpoint SponsorBlock as a problem in the past, but it’s been a while.

If it is something in settings, you could always Reset Settings from your settings menu to see if it makes any difference.

Yes, indeed! “SponsorBlock for YouTube" was preinstalled. I didn’t install an extension after the initial installation, but found it in the Extensions tab. Well, I didn’t remove it - what’s better than YouTube without advertising? :sunglasses: The download page for the Brave browser was: https://brave.com/de/

I have since compared the old profile with the new one - every setting. Now both have exactly the same settings. The streams don’t work with the old profile, but they do with the new one. Strange!

Be that as it may! Your input helped me a lot to understand Brave! Thank you very much for that and best wishes from Hamburg!
