BAT on Uphold suddenly transferred back to "Brave Software International"

I have my Brave Browser connected to Uphold. Everything went fine for months.
Today, I realized that on 21st April, nearly my whole BAT (16.75) was transferred back to “Brave Software International”. I did not authorize this transaction. But I also got no information of what happened, what triggered it.

Can someone explain to me why BAT was removed from my Uphold account and how I can prevent it from happening in the future?

Check all your devices linked to uphold and make sure auto contribute is turned off

Only my PC Browser is linked to Uphold and Auto Contribute is disabled. I’ve never enabled it.

I think the problem lies with gui talking to braves server and they been having server issues, if iam correct and these settings are saved on Braves servers then the gui may need to communicate better with sever, gui shouldn’t update in browser until Braves server respond back to the gui call that settings have been logged server side, or at least grey out this gui until server connection is establish or create a portal for reward settings @Mattches

Thanks for reporting. I’d like to ask a few questions to start:

  • Auto Contribute is ON by default and must be manually turned OFF. Did you turn it OFF?
  • Do you have multiple devices linked to your Uphold? If so, is Auto Contribute turned OFF on each of these devices?
  • Can you share a screenshot of your Contributions and Event Log tabs which can be found here brave://rewards-internals/

@steeven Thank you for your help.

  • Auto Contribute is OFF. If it is ON by default, I turned it off right at the beginning.
  • I don’t have mutliple devices linked to Uphold. I wanted to link my phone, but I learned that I need 25 BAT first to link it to the same Uphold account. (But another weird thing here, don’t know if this is connected: Brave on my Android always crashes lately when I try to open the Brave Rewards page)
  • The Contributions tab is empty in brave://rewards-internals/ Eventlog see below.


Hi, also had the same issue. Luckily I only had one month’s contributions in my wallet but when I didn’t transfer the funds like usual they took everything for contributions and even said there wasn’t enough funds for all the contributions. Auto contribute is off and has been since the beginning. Haven’t touched my settings again since the beginning so except if there was some type of update that switched it on again no deductions was authorized. Was quite weird that this happened right when the price of Bat spiked :thinking:

I got the following answer from Uphold:

We’re sorry to hear about this, upon reviewing the mentioned transaction(s) it seems it/they might be related to tips or auto contributions as they were triggered by Brave Browser. I advise you to check your Rewards settings and scroll down, there is an option where you see the status. If in any case it is “on” then that would be the reason why this transaction was executed automatically. If the feature is off please contact the Brave support team directly as they should be able to better assist you with this case.

But as I already said, auto contribution was OFF all the time. Even if it would have been on, the default monthly payment would only be “up to 1.000 BAT” according to the settings.

What is the current state if this matter on your side?

Hi, I faced the same problem and what I’ve realized is that every time you update Brave browser the Auto-Contribution option turns ON. At least this is what happened to me… And now how can we claim our earnings back? Can we?

Hm, but for me it was OFF. And even if it would have been ON, the default setting is “up to 1.00 BAT”. That doesn’t explain that 16 BAT were transferred off my wallet.

Idk why this keeps happening every damn time. Brave should really fix this issue. It make brave look like a scam to people, who have no idea about what happened to their brave rewards.

Agreed this is the most egregious bug in Brave and it’s even more egregious that it’s continued for this long, of all bugs this one should be top priority and people effected should be compensated immediately

I still demand my money back.
