Background play not working at all in Android

I go to Settings → Media

I click on “Background play”. It says “Your changes will take effect next time you relaunch”, with an option to “relaunch now”.

Select “relaunch now”, wait for relaunch.

Go to Settings → Media

“Background play” is still disabled.

Repeat ad infinitum, setting is never changed to “on”.

Can you please tell me what browser version you’re using as well as the Android model?

Browser just installed so latest version. OS is MIUI 13.0.16 based on Android 12 SKQ1.210908.001

I found a workaround. Instead of asking to restart Brave, I just closed it and killed the task. Once I opened it again the setting was changed correctly. So it’s a problem with the restarting of Brave which seems to undo (or not commit) the settings change.
