2023 CPU overload and overheating on Mac M1

Description of the issue: Brave consuming massive CPU capacity and overheating
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Start Brave
  2. Open even 1 tab
  3. Get irritated by the massive increase in heat and drop in battery life

Expected result: Brave shouldn’t be hammering my CPU or battery life to run basic browsing. Its usage is at 221%. In contrast, Safari is consuming 10.8%.

Brave Version( check About Brave): Brave is up to date: Version 1.52.126 Chromium: 114.0.5735.133 (Official Build) (arm64)

Additional Information:

What does the built-in Brave task manager show? Also is Hardware Acceleration enabled?

Hardware Acceleration is disabled, cookies are off, cache cleared.

Disabling Hardware Acceleration will use more CPU resources, was there a reason why it was changed?

I disabled it after reading some posts on this forum that suggested turning it off to reduce the impact on battery/CPU. Seems I misunderstood the recommendation but the problem was there before I disabled it.

Leaving the defaults, disabling hardware acelleration good for buggy drivers/older graphics cards. I have an older M1 Macbookpro (2020) I can test on.
Screenshot doesn’t show the resources, does disabling all extensions help? From a clean start, is the resources okay? (via the Brave task manager).

Continues to happen on two Mac M1s (2020 and 2021) — they’re basically cooking, reaching 95+ degrees.

Disabling extensions seems, so far, to have made some impact on overheating but I’m keeping an eye on it and will update. Is it possible/likely that a specific extension can massively impact performance? I use the extensions on a daily basis so having to disable them all isn’t really a long-term solution.

Which extension is causing it? just disable each until you notice a big change.
