Not a brave user yet (im on operagx) ive been having this issue for the last few days and ive been trying to fix it all morning. For now enabling “Use DNS-over-HTTPS instead of the system’s DNS settings” seems to have fixed it for me. Not sure if other browsers have this setting but i figured id create an account and post just in case it helps anyone
Found the solution for me on one of my computers. Something is being blocked and I’m pretty sure it is googleapis.com. If you use a DNS sinkhole or have your DNS pointed to a third party that uses a sinkhole, this could be your problem. Also this may be why disabling extensions may work too, especially if they are ad-blocking in any capacity.
Troubleshooting: Open a youtube video and start playing. Hit F12 for the devtools to show up. Click on “Console” and check if you see any errors (in red if Chrome) that have “goolgeapis” in their url (Example: POST https://jnn-pa.googleapis.com/$rpc/google.internal.waa.v1.Waa/Create net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED). If so that could be the problem. As soon as I took googleapis.com out of my DNS sinkhole, video started playing normally again, and the errors for googleapis don’t show up any more.
Good Luck
Careful guys, this one is a Hero.
This answer fixed the issue for me. It was indeed the “googleapis” that ware being blocked that stopped the video’s from playing correctly.
What was blocking the domain? a custom rule?
Morning,
One of the rulesets that I have on pihole. After cleaning out the blocked records enabling the DNSBlocker, opening Youtube I had the same issue and a bunch of requests for google api url (jnn-pa.googleapis.com). Temporarily whitelisted it, did a dns flush on windows, everything was fixed for me.
On all devices in the network.
Enjoy 2025!
