I’m going to provide the information you requested but want to note the fact that I am not able to update to a current version of Brave because my MacBook Pro won’t support it (i.e., at the hardware level). I can update OS Mojave (10.14.3) to v.10.15 but not to any higher version.
I don’t, however, see how that could affect the current issue, since I’m using both an OS version and a Brave version that were working fine with YouTube – unless Google has made some unannounced change(s) to YouTube so that it can take its snooping on users to a new and higher level.
I’ll get to the other items soon as I can. Thanks for your interest.
Up to you if you want to update, but it might buy you some more capabilities and all.
Not quite sure myself, but I know you’d have some outdated content filters or if components are updated, it might be trying to do something it’s not capable of. That’s not a technical answer but just is a personal thought. (in other words, a wild assumption that may not apply at all. Just know there’s some possible disconnect in capabilities and update versions, just not sure how much)
Yeah, they have. Haven’t you noticed all the complaints of people getting messages from YouTube saying we aren’t allowed to use adblock? They are doing everything they can to combat adblockers and force people to view ads. Essentially you need to be using most recent technology to have no issues. If you can’t update to newer versions of Brave, you may need to look at using uBlock Origin instead of Shields.
In any case, maybe part of the other steps might provide more insight. Don’t forget I’m not a developer or anything, so I just walk through a lot of basic steps and generally do some triage for Support and/or devs. My knowledge and expertise is incredibly limited.
But definitely will walk with you through what little things I can and will make assumptions, but in the end likely will have to tag in some of the others if we don’t get to a solution together. I just want to make sure we try to do all that we can before then.
> Haven’t you noticed all the complaints of people getting messages from YouTube saying we aren’t allowed to use adblock?
No. I haven’t heard a peep or seen any of that. Where are these complaints occurring?
That, however, throws a whole new light on my issue. If that’s what’s been happening, the most likely cause of my problem is that Google has proactively nullified Brave’s shields in my version of Brave. Meaning I’ll be stuck with having to use Shields Down on YouTube webpages as long as I’m using my current macOS/Brave configuration
Have Brave’s developers been able to respond effectively to these actions by Google in more recent releases of Brave?
Older versions of Brave won’t get any newer filter options. Since it will be stuck on the older version of Adblock Rust. Probably the only option here for users of older Brave users on unsupported platforms is to use an adblock extension.
It’s a constant back and forth. Brave usually stays on top of things. Like I said earlier though, you’ll likely need to update OS and Brave or you’ll need to just switch to using extensions like uBlock Origin.
Everywhere on the internet, for all platforms. Been going on for a while now.
Thanks for all that. I am going through it. Discussion of the topic must be limited to tech regions of the Internet, as I have not seen or heard anything about this – except regarding Manifest V3.
I read (months ago) that Google’s plan to cripple adblockers like uBlock Origin in Manifest V3 was going to render them useless (though Brave’s internal adblocking would not be affected).
I don’t know whether V3 is currently being (or has already been) rolled out.
Or whether Google has found other ways to cripple uBlock prior to V3.
Not sure about same privacy level but it will still be pretty solid. The reason I mentioned disabling Shields and using uBlock Origin is because sometimes filters can create conflict. Plus some content might recognize the older filter and try to block access, such as what YouTube has been doing to people. So generally it’s best just to use something with most recent tech and filters you can get.
Just about anywhere YouTube is talked about. It’s exploded on social media and all as people have complained as well. But as you said, all depends on the places you go. If you’re not much for places like Reddit and all, you’ll likely have missed it.
Not sure about the word choice, but this is what I’ve been trying to share with you in prior links and all as well. YouTube is actually working on increase their ability to detect if you’re using any adblock at all, whether it be Shields, Adblock Plus, uBlock, uBlock Origin, Ghostery, or whatever else. If they see ads or content is being blocked, they try to prevent you from accessing YouTube. That aside, they also are constantly adjusting code in order to try to push ads through adblock tech. As a result, a lot of people who work on these adblock technologies are working together to constantly update filters so YouTube ads can keep getting blocked without Google/YouTube penalizing us.
Hasn’t hit yet. They keep pushing things back. Last is said to be happening around June of this year. We shall see. I mean, they said in the past it was going to hit in 2020, then 2021, then 2022, then 2023, and now saying will happen here in 2024.
With ‘Block scripts’ disabled but ‘Allow all trackers and ads’ enabled, I can see YouTube screens with Shields ‘up’.
That’s preferable to just having all Shields ‘down’, isn’t it?
I am also wondering whether I could enable some/all of Brave’s built-in adblock lists and then get away with using Shields Down. Do you know? (I haven’t used any adblock lists before but have seen them recommended as an alternative to using, e.g., uBlock Origin.)
