Slow typing and backspacing in address bar under wayland

Description of the issue:
When using Wayland, typing in the address bar is slow and “blinks” often, and when you type faster than a certain speed, it starts to backspace and come back. I saw similar problems with Discord when using xwayland in the past, but Brave is set to “Wayland preferred”.

Say you type https://community.brave.com/, by the time I get to comm, I will see the cursor warp back to c, then go back to m. It is super confusing, especially when you do need to correct an error and you hit the backspace quickly, it’s warping twice.

How can this issue be reproduced?

Type fast

Expected result:

Normal typing response, not teleporting cursors.

Brave Version( check About Brave):

Version 1.67.123 Chromium: 126.0.6478.126 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information:

It does not seem to happen all the time, and it is based on how fast you type. It will not happen without being able to type fast.

@BobbyThortan,
Thank you for reporting. Yeah Wayland seems to be causing lots of issues in general — not sure I’ve seen this specific one yet. Going to ask our Linux team and double check Github first before logging.

In the meantime, are you able to check and see if this occurs in other browsers as well?

I have only seen it in Discord in the past, Discord was really bad and did this a lot unless I used the flags to force it into Wayland. Since xWayland patch a few months ago, I don’t see it in Discord and I don’t need to use the wayland ozone flags anymore.

The wayland patch and recent nvidia drivers have eliminated 99% of my Wayland problems, that 1% is mostly Brave.

I currently have 3 issues off hand left in Brave.

  • Typing teleporting (This issue)
  • Crashing when dragging out tabs (my other post, I am testing setting zone to Default as suggested in another post).
  • Flickering with grid like layouts, think Youtube video cards, and other things similar, the card elements will flicker in and out individually. For example, if you are looking at a grid of 9 youtube videos, one or two videos may flicker and disappear and reappear rapidly. My custom dashboard that has cards for different links, flash in and out as well.

It looks like the “fix” to set Brave to use “Default” (which I believe forces it into X11) might have fixed the typing and crashing, but it is really early to tell, I literally just changed it and tried for 30 seconds. Going to try it for the next hour or so and by then I should know. I thought I was helping things by forcing Brave to use Wayland mode.

Yeah keep me updated on whether or not any of these issues are resolved after changing the flag mentioned in your other thread.

Both issues still happening.

Thank you for confirming.
I have opened the following issue on Github for our devs to review:

I do feel like it is “better” but not fixed with the change. I still see both of them happen, but it feels like it isn’t as often. Not really scientific, but the other day I had to restart my browser like 20+ times, and I saw the typing problem 10+ times.

Last 24 hours after the change, I’ve restarted the browser 3-4 times maybe and saw the typing thing 2-3 times? Could just be a lucky day, but it definitely isn’t gone but may be less frequent.

I have been using ozone “Default” for a week or so now and the problem is almost non-existent. When I first switched, I was still seeing these two problems but now I almost never do. I don’t know what I lose using Default, but it seems to have helped a lot.
