Screen turning off while watching videos on Brave… After the new update the screen turns off when watching a video on Brave… I don’t want to change my phone settings I want this issue to be fixed within the app.
Hi, I have similar issue starting yesterday with brave android stable 1.75.175 Chromium: 133.0.6943.54 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Unfortunately I couldn’t find out a way how to reproduce it. For now, exit and re open the app seems get rid of it. Until it’s randomly appear again.
@EnderVoice_YT it’s important to share more details like which version of Android you’re on and what particular version of Brave you’re using.
In addition, could you clarify a bit more about your situation? For example, are you saying that your phone is automatically locking the screen due to inactivity and you’re then having to unlock it? If so, that’s more of an OS issue and not much that can be done to override that.
Some Android have a setting for something like Keep screen on while viewing
which might help.
I don’t think you read properly I updated Brave to the latest version available and I’m not using an obsolete OS I’m on Android 14 and it’s no OS bug if it was an OS bug I would have faced the same issue on every other Video playing apps like YouTube and the Build-in Video player app… The bug was in the app cause as soon as I updated Brave the screen turned off due to inactivity (It was not happening before the update) also today a day after that issue the app seems to work fine no screen time out and all (maybe it’s fixed but I’ll see if the issue comes again)
Today the app is working fine but I’ll see if this screen time out bug starts again rn it’s all good
I read it properly. In the years I have been helping here I’ve learned to look for specific information. There have been a lot of times people claimed to be using the latest version available but then learned one of two things:
- They assumed but were incorrect
-or- - They were using an outdated OS. So when they said it was the latest available, it was…but for their. In reality both their OS and version of Brave used were outdated because their device was no longer supported.
So having someone share specific information, such as envyy
did, at least helps to make sure there’s no assumption. Though they didn’t share which Android OS, as sometimes the issue might happen in like Android 10 but not Android 12.
Correct. I wasn’t saying it was an OS bug. I was saying it’s OS setting perhaps. Again, keep in mind there’s usually a set of data that people try to gather when issues are being reported. Knowing more about the device, browser version, settings on both, and overall conditions for an issue to occur helps in people trying to replicate a problem and provide solutions. When missing information, it can be difficult to know what’s going on or how to fix things.
Sounds good. We’ll leave this topic open for you to come back and report if the issue returns. If it does, then by all means will be good to try to give more details so everyone can look into it and try to help more.
@envyy can you advise if still having the issue? If so:
-
Are you also on Android 14 or a different version of Android?
-
What is your setting for your screen timeout? This is your Android’s settings → display → screen timeout
-
Have you noticed if this happens on any particular website more than others?
-
Does this also happen in Chrome?
-
If you also installed Brave Beta or Brave Nightly, does it happen there as well?
I read some review’s on Google Play and I saw one more person complaining about the screen not staying awake while watching YouTube video on Brave… (I watch Anime on Brave and it was working fine before the update now after the update the screen sometimes doesn’t stay awake… This morning it was working now again this evening it’s again not staying awake)
Before the update of Brave (The current latest version) (I regularly update my apps and games) brave was working fine with no issues but after the update the issue of my screen not staying awake is caused I don’t want to keep tapping my screen to keep my screen awake while watching some Anime… I can change my own device settings to keep my screen awake for longer but I don’t want that I usually keep it at 2 minutes but due to this recent bug in the app I have to keep my screen awake time to 10 min … I could turn on developer settings and turn on screen stay awake while charging but if I turn on developer mode the app Digi Locker doesn’t open the app asks me to close the developer setting… Also I don’t want to keep changing my settings… I also tried
*://flags * but I couldn’t find any options like “Keep screen on during video playback” …
@Mattches I don’t have a newer Android to test on. Figured I’d tag you to see if you know anything.
@EnderVoice_YT it would be helpful if you can also test on either Brave Beta or Brave Nightly. If it happens there, to potentially check on Chrome as well. This is to try to see where the issue occurs. If it only is on Release version, then it’s a version specific problem perhaps. If it happens on Beta or Nightly, then it might be Chromium specific. If it happens on Chrome, it guarantees it’s Chromium at least.
@EnderVoice_YT,
Can you clarify whether or not this issue is happening for any/all video content playing in Brave? Or is it just this anime site that you’re using that’s exhibiting the problem? For example, if you visit YouTube and stream content there, does the screen still shut off in the same way?
Additionally, can you share a link to the site you’re using to watch anime so that I can test on my end?
Are you still having this issue. I was having this issue myself, but today it seems to work. I only saw this issue when watching Youtube. This happened both fullscreen and non-fullscreen while watching Youtube. I didn’t do anything, which is a little annoying, but I knew that it would resolve itself. I had seen this in the past. It seems like a weird intermittent issue.
The name of the website is animepahe I have not tested YouTube but I’ve seen a review on Playstore saying that their screen also turns off when they are watching a YouTube video. (I only choose the latest version reviews so I could see if it was a problem on my end or was a problem in the app, there were other reviews also mentioning about the same issue I’m having)
Yes the same happened to me it worked fine in the morning but now again it started… But I was watching anime on another website not YouTube so it seems there might be a bug in the app itself. Yes?
I don’t know about the Beta or Nightly version as I’ve only been using the normal Brave Browser (The version I’m on is 1.75.175 ) that’s the latest one I got on my device which was released on 5th Feb 2025…
I’ll check on crome too (I don’t use them because I don’t like all those ads / scam ads / corn ads they just make my viewing experience bad, Brave browser is very good and blocking those annoying ads so I just like to use Brave as my default browers so I had not tried on other browers will see if the same happens there or not)
Hmm. Interesting. Let me catch up on the rest of the info you posted and I’ll see if I can replicate the issue. BTW, I should have mentioned that I’m on Samsung One UI 6.1, Android 14, Brave 1.75.175. I’ll check Beta as well. I don’t run Nightly on mobile.
@EnderVoice_YT can you please test a few different sites on your device and see whether or not the screen turns off when viewing content there? Ideally, if you could test a few more sites (any sites will do) that would be great. For sake of ease, you can try viewing content on:
On my end, I went ahead and tested to see if I could reproduce this behavior on my Android device (Samsung Galaxy S22+, Android 14) in the latest Brave build (v1.75.175). I was able to stream content on it in both full screen and standard/vertical orientation without the screen turning off.
Can you also confirm for me the exact device model you’re using when you see this issue?
I have a similar problem. Screen just dims then goes off and it wasn’t doing this before. I recently updated the app as well. I thought it’s just other players but YouTube does this as well. It takes exactly 2mins.
It seems to be working now, but I didn’t change anything. Strange.
Same problem started to happening to me too; while watching videos on YouTube, even when it is fullscreen landscape mode, it dimms first and locks the screen. I have tried things like unrestrecring battery use of Brave etc. it’s no use. As some of friends mentioned here, sometimes it doesn’t happen, but when it starts happening, I couldn’t find a way to fix it. Everything is up to date.
App ver: Brave 1.75.175, Chromium 133.0.6943.54
OS: Android 14; Build/UP1A.231005.007
One UI ver: 6.1
Samsung S21FE firmware ver: G990EXXSCFYA2 /
G990EOJMCFYA2 / G990EXXSCFYA3
There is a setting for Android where it uses front camera and if it detects your face looking at the screen, it doesn’t shut the screen but I don’t want to use that feature because I think it would use more battery to keep the camera always on. And it doesn’t feel good to know your front camera always watching you.
Please fix this problem or revert the update. Thank you.
Hi all
Having the same issue so thought id drop my setup here too, ive noticed we all seem to be on OneUI if that helps
OS - One UI 6.1.1
Android 14
Kernal 5.10.209
Brave - 1.75.175, Chromium 133.0.6943.54
I use Brave to watch youtube, OS doesnt seem to recognise Brave as playing media causing the screen to timeout while watching videos. Doesnt happen on any other apps
Hope this helps to find a fix
