I have an old Asus chromebook - but ‘linux’ kept coming up - why is that please?

Did you mean when you trying to install Brave from brave.com ?

Brave have no “official version” for Chromebook. So it’s either you install the Android version from Play Store or desktop version using Linux installation instructions.
