Hi, I’m living in the countryside and our net speed is very week, so I’m unable to work if Brave is running an update. How can I stop this automatic updates and do them when I don’t need the internet for working?
Otherwise I couldn’t use Brave at all…
Thanks for help!
There’s no official way to prevent automatic update.
Thanks! So I have to go back to Firefox…
My updates aren’t automatic. I get a notification and either choose to do it then & there or just update during a break or overnight. Now, if you never update, then yes, don’t be surprised when forced to do so. Surely, a person isn’t working constantly and can afford to update during down time. IT doesn’t take forever. Firefox & all the others have popups galore. No protection, no thanks!
@Saoiray How does it work? This is the question. I don’t get any notifications about necessary updates. This is why I’m asking here…!
I have never received any “notification” on update either. The only thing I’ve ever seen and known Brave to do is to Check for updates
when you open About Brave
. At that point it might show you an update is available and allow you to apply it now, at which point you have to restart your browser.
But the auto update process is always running in the background. It can and does download by itself, but it won’t restart the browser to apply the updates. This will happen automatically as you exit Brave or when you go to manually do it by checking on the About Brave
part as I mentioned and clicking. I’m guessing this is actually what they are referencing in terms of notification and choosing to update.
I get a popup that asks if I want to update Brave now or later. Sometimes I select “Remind me later” if I’m watching something. @Mattches I’ve now added screenshots below.
Same here, I’m so sick of starting up the browser and every single time I receive a notification that there’s going to be an update. they’re so invasive that even after disabling in the system settings Brave auto update it still pushes through. if you delete the auto update folder then it takes a good minute for the browser to even open. I’m about to switch back to Chrome it seems less invasive
@davisdesigns thanks for your experiences! Yes, technical devices should support our needs, but in sooooo many cases we are expected to adapt our lives to the needs of technologies! That’s totally backwards. I feel sorry for every person who values their human-biological intelligence so little that they even talk about AI. If a computer achieves anything, it is exclusively because a human has programmed it. Anything more impressive than that is ultimately just speed.
However, fortunately we have tonns of software to choose from. For the shopping needs with my kitchen-Laptop I don’t mind being temporarily slowed down by Brave-updates. In my office Brave is out. All the best!
@Mattches sorry to bother, but you able to expand on this? I know there’s no official way to turn off auto update. But there seems to be a bit of a disconnect here in how it works in terms of it automatically downloading while in use and if/when any notification would be given about updates being available.
So I guess main thing here is trying to tackle the concern of OP in regards to perhaps making sure nothing is triggered while they are actively using the browser?
The browser will download and attempt to apply updates while using the browser or while its closed. The browser will not be fully updated though until the updates are downloaded, installed and the browser is restarted.
However, I am a little confused about what some of you all are saying. Can anyone please clarify the specific notification they’re referring to? Do you mean the update notification on the main menu that appears in the browser here?
Or the update notification that appears on the About Brave
page here?
Or a different notification all together?
Ignore the foolish, short-sided griping about something designed to protect & improve user experience. They’re just lazy. This is like deciding not to sleep & wondering why you’re tired.
Update as much as needed. Still waiting on the audio / mute tab issue to be fixed. If you were to update less, I’d have to wait even longer for that patch.
Fewer updates means more susceptibility to pop ups & ads. Superior attention to blocking those are the primary reason I use Brave instead of the others.
As for your question, I’m on a Mac. When it’s time for an update, there’s a popup that appears on screen asking to “update now” or “remind me later”. Unless I’ve got a lot going on screen, I usually update asap because I find that doing so immediately improves the experience (go figure).
I would screenshot, but I’m already up to date & waiting on the audio / mute tab fix in the next update. I’ll screenshot and then post it.
Hi! I’ve got the solution! Use Little Snitch and you can control and block/allow any connection you want!
