Error code 5 on google.com

Description of the issue: Error code 5 has started appearing on google.com, and the page crashes anytime I enter google.com or try to search something in the search bar with Google set to the default search engine.

How can this issue be reproduced?: I can reproduce this issue by entering google.com or trying to search with google as the main search engine

  1. I have cleared browser cache, cookies and site data, as well as disabled all extensions, does not fix the issue.
  2. I have restarted my PC, the issue still persists.
  3. This does not happen using a private window, any other web browser, and Google.com specifically is the only website affected (Gmail, Drive, etc all work as expected).

Expected result: To resolve the issue with Google website and google search

**Brave Version: 1.71.114

This issue only appeared last night. Iā€™m on a Mac desktop running the latest version of MacOS Monterey.

Please use ā€œAbout Braveā€ and report the Chromium version.

The version is showing v1.71.114

I suspect a problem with the latest Chromium - the core Internet browser used within Brave Browser (and within Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and others):

I created a new profile in Brave to see if the issue would persist. It did not persist with a new profile. So then I switched back to my main profile and used the ā€˜Reset Settingsā€™ option in Brave settings. That resolved the issue.

Good to hear. Do some flight testing with that, and when you are comfortable that your fix is stable . . . maybe mark your post as a solution.

Exactly the same issue. Except I can get to Google results after typing a request in the URL bar.
Iā€™m on Mac. I canā€™t find any place where I could create a new profile for Brave.
Will this be fixed in a future update?

If youā€™re on a Mac then the menu at the very top of the screen above your brave Window will have a ā€˜Profilesā€™ tab. My issue was resolved by going to Brave Settings>Reset settings and doing the reset.

Thank you for your fast answer Keenenkb!
OK, resetting settings worked for me as well. Wow this thing really drove me crazy
And yes, my eyes finally could find the Profiles menu, after that, haha!
Thank you for your help!

Same Issue with all google.de

Which settings are affected with a reset? I made a LOT of customizations. Loosing everything would be a lot of work.

Any other workaround?

Based on Braveā€™s documentation: How do I reset Brave settings to default?

These settings are restored back to default when you reset settings:
*Default search engine, which is changed back to Google
*Homepage and tabs
*The new tab page
*Tabs you have pinned
*Content settings, like letting a site show you pop-ups or use your microphone
*Cookies and site data, like items in an online shopping cart
*Extensions and themes

The only other workaround I found is creating a new profile.

I really canā€™t do thatā€¦ Have so many data in my extensions (especially my AI assistant).

Can we expect a bugfix?

If you create a new profile you still have access to your original profile as well. You will just have the option of choosing which profile to load when you launch the web browser.

Maybe someone who works for Brave developers will chime in about any bug fixes.

I ran into this issue earlier today, and after some testing determined that it is related to location services. I get this error code whenever I enable location services for a site. Tried it a bunch of different ways.

I actually started another topic for it, but itā€™s my first post so is currently being reviewed and not up yet.

Thanks for sharing your great tip, FriendlyLeopardShark!

I had exactly the same problem on my Macbook. This is how it was resolved.

Braveā€™s Settings
Privacy and Security on the left
Site and Shields Settings
Location under Permissions
Allowed to see your location at the bottom
delete the google entry

Now itā€™s working all right without creating a new profile or using a private window.

Thanks again!

That is super helpful for getting it working at all, appreciate it!

Unfortunately when I turn location services back on for any site the error returns. I suppose I can just block them all outright so I donā€™t run into it, but I actually like it for some shopping sites, so if this is a bug would love to get it fixed.
