Description of the issue:
I’m trying to make use of Brave’s Copy link to highlight text functionality. But when I select/highlight the text with my mouse, Copy link to highlight in the context menu, and then share the copied link with text, or even when I put the copied content to Brave’s address bar and press Enter / reload the page, nothing happens, i.e. the browser doesn’t take me to the highlighted portion of text.
There was a Github report regarding this issue, but the report was assigned the closed/wontfix label, and was eventually closed by its author.
@Mattches do you mind checking why the aforementioned report was assigned the closed/wontfix label, am I missing something about the Copy link to highlight option that we don’t want in Brave?
Thank you for a prompt reply indeed!
It’s strange, if not funny, to see the issue closed as wontfix when the feature fails to work as intended but is turned on by default. No big deal, can live without it.
Btw, I’ve also tried an extension, which is meant to do the same but it doesn’t work either…
Thank you anyway!
The reason this feature is currently labeled as wontfix is because it introduces some privacy/security risks in it’s current implementation. See our Senior privacy researcher raising issue with this here: https://github.com/WICG/scroll-to-text-fragment/issues/76
Thank you, @Mattches. I tried to find more information but was using different terms - “Copy link to highlight” so didn’t see any of the mentioned threads
Just for your information, opened the following Github ticket regarding the feature. No reason to have the Copy link to highlight option available after a right-click as long as the functionality of the aforementioned option isn’t available.
Thank you @lolo for bringing this up, and thank you to @Mattches for providing the extra details
