"Clear history" and "Clear private data" on ios

Latest ios version. The … settings menu has been redesigned to include a new “History” icon and display where you can click and then click the trash can to ‘clear history’. This is in addition and separate from the Settings clear history screens. Users may assume this is a replacement for clearing history in the settings, as its two separate displays to view and remove history, and also assume its removing their cookies and sign in data according to your settings for clearing data, but it doesn’t. There is also “shred data” that is another separate option from privacy or history, but not sure what that does. The fragmentation of these settings is confusing.

@Utidiysyisitdixoxohd,
I think that the labeling should be fairly self explanatory. " [browsing] History" is simply a type of browsing data that is stored and can be cleared. The new menu allows quick access for users to easily do this. Where as “Clear browsing data”, as it’s name implies, refers to clearing a variety of data that is stored in the browser.

The “Shred data” feature is used to delete specific site data in a single tap once when desired, rather than having to go into settings and manually delete site data for that page, or clearing all browsing data stored. More on Shred here:

Ok well I will respectfully disagree. Fragmenting history and cache settings into three different places within the app and renaming them all is confusing and not intuitive for the user.

Each of these implementations serve a different purpose. If they were all bundled in as the same thing, the user would ultimately have less control over their browser.

“I want to view or delete some of my browsing history (sites that I’ve visited)”:
Use the History menu – Menu --> History.

“I want to delete all types of browsing data (or some subset of data types, including history)”:
Use Clear browsing dataMenu --> All Settings --> Shields & Privacy --> Clear private data

“I want to ensure that a specific site deletes all browsing data after visiting it”:
Use the Shred option – Visit the site, tap the Shields icon then Shred data
