Auto Shred: Don’t delete browsing history. Feedback/Feature Request

On your desktop application, there is a feature known as “Forget me when I close this site.”

This feature eliminates all data except for browsing history when a tab is closed. It does not delete browsing history.

However, on iOS, this feature is not available. Instead, “Auto Shred” deletes everything, including browsing history and cookies/cache.

The purpose of this feature is unclear, as iOS already offers a “private browsing only mode.” If I wanted to prevent my browsing history from being recorded and/ or automatically deleted, I would utilize that feature.

”Private browsing only mode” is designed solely for that purpose. It prevents the browser from saving history, cookies, cache, and other data.

So, my feedback/request is that “Auto Shred” should have an option not to delete browsing history like its desktop feature counterpart. It should only delete the necessary data, such as cookies and cache.

About Private Windows

@Terrance the difference between Private and Shred is the overall impact. If you’re in Private then it loads with absolutely no cookies and it clears everything from that session. The overall intent of Shred is that it allows you to only erase particular websites.

Also, just want to point out that a month or two ago they said that they are intended to replace Forget me when I close this site with Shred on all devices.

That said, let me tag in @StephenHeaps to see if he might be able to give any feedback on whether they might be considering different tiers of Shred so people can keep things like History if they want. Perhaps of implementing both the Forget me when I close this site and Shred as two separate options.

A private window in Brave prevents Internet browsing history, form data, cookies and site data from being saved once you close the window. However, bookmarks saved from private windows are saved for regular windows too.
Note that some cookies and site data may be saved for the session, but will not be remembered when the browser is closed. Downloads and bookmarks are still saved even after closing a private window.

So, cookies do stay during the duration of the private tab session until closed. Browsing history is not recorded or saved while browsing with private browsing. That is why I said if I wanted my browsing history to be deleted or not recorded at all on iOS, I would use Brave’s “private browsing only mode”. Not “Auto Shred”. I thought “Auto Shred” would just delete cookies and cache automatically. But not browsing history. Like “Forget me when I close this site.” does on desktop.

Thank you! I like that my cookies and cache auto-delete when I close the tabs. With ”Auto Shred” being turned on.

I just hate how on iOS my browsing history also deletes along with this ”Auto Shred” setting being on.

I’m a user who prefers to keep their browsing history. However, with this setting enabled, I can’t maintain my browsing history.

While I appreciate the convenience of not having to manually delete cookies on iOS, this inability to keep my browsing history has made me revert to the manual cookie deletion process.

I was excited about this feature as I used “forget me” on my desktop and Safari on iOS requires multiple steps to delete just cookies and preserve browsing history.

So, having a feature that would automatically delete my cookies with each tab of a related site closed and keep my browsing history. Was what I was looking for.

Nevertheless, I suppose I’m back to manual cookie deletion again.

They state at the bottom:

The Auto Shred feature for iOS works like the “Forget me when I close this site” feature on Desktop and Android. When Shred becomes available on Desktop and Android, it will replace the “Forget me when I close this site” feature.

However, “Auto Shred” doesn’t function like the “Forget me when I close this site” feature. As, “Forget me when I close this site” doesn’t delete browsing history on Desktop or Android.

Automatically shred

Auto Shred lets you automatically delete data for specific sites, so you don’t have to remember to clear data from specific sites. To do so:

  1. Open Shields.
  2. Tap Advanced Controls.
  3. Tap Shred Site Data.

You can configure Auto Shred to happen when all tabs for a site are closed, or on browser restart. Auto Shredding on Site Tabs Closedmeans that whenever you close the last tab for a site, Brave will automatically Shred that site’s data.

You can also set Auto Shred to happen for allsites:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Shields & Privacy.
  3. Tap Auto Shred.

The Auto Shred feature for iOS works like the “Forget me when I close this site” feature on Desktop and Android. When Shred becomes available on Desktop and Android, it will replace the “Forget me when I close this site” feature.
