Hi
I am thinking of trying Brave VPN for free trial in 7 days but how exactly does a VPN works and will it slow down the broadband speed?
Does Brave VPN only protect the Brave browser or anything else like my Proton mail?
@TerMinator, it sounds like you’re starting with the basics, so let me break it down for you:
- Internet Connection & IP Address: When you connect to the internet, your device gets an IP address, like a digital home address. Websites can see this address, which identifies your connection. Even if you clear cookies or use different browsers, your IP address still reveals your identity.
- VPN & Proxy: A VPN or Proxy hides your IP address. Instead of connecting directly from your device to a website, your connection goes through a VPN or Proxy, which then connects to the site. The website only sees the IP address of the VPN or Proxy, not yours. VPNs generally offer better security and encryption than proxies.
- Firewall: Just like a physical firewall slows down a fire, a computer firewall filters out harmful data trying to enter or leave your computer. It blocks unwanted traffic while allowing safe information through.
- Brave VPN+Firewall: This service works on your entire device, not just the Brave browser. It masks your IP address and encrypts your data across all apps and services, including things like ProtonMail. However, you do need to have Brave installed to use it. The VPN protects your privacy, while the firewall blocks ads, trackers, and other potentially harmful traffic. It’s not an antivirus, but it adds a solid layer of security.
- Broadband Speed: Using a VPN might affect your internet speed because your data is being relayed through an additional server. The impact depends on various factors, including your connection speed and the VPN server’s performance.

thanks for the info. Is it good or bad then with a VPN and does it affect the broadband much when it comes to speed?
