Brave Slowing to a Crawl

I know this has been reported all over the web… but yet to find a solution. I’ve tried Brave on both an iMac 2017 and Mac Mini 2024. Both of them, particularly in WordPress but not exclusively, come to a debilitating halt as words type slowly, cursor slowly moves, etc. Also, the fan on the computer(s) begins to rev — something that’s never happened on the Mac Mini until today when I downloaded Brave to try again.

Since I have tried Brave on two computers with the same results — and open the same tabs in Firefox without any issues — there is definitely something funky going on in Brave (as confirmed by numerous other users). Just surprised that the developers have not fixed this yet.

The other really weird issue is that, when I return to other tabs, the screen is blank and takes several seconds at times to show the content. I don’t know if these two issues are related…

Version 1.73.104 Chromium: 131.0.6778.204 (Official Build) (arm64)/Mac Sequoia 15.2 (24C101)

Take a look at Macs Fan Control. If you get that and learn how to use it, you may find that the fans may run more often, in order to keep your gear cool.

And that may be some of the answer - improved fan speed control - instead of the Mac trying to attenuate some heating issue(s) by lowering response times.

You could become familiary with and monitor both:

  • Brave Browser Task Manager
  • Apple Activity Monitor

Also, you could monitor the Mac’s activity via a Terminal.app window - enter:

  • top -F -R -s 2 -o cpu -n 10 -stats pid,command,cpu,time,state,rsize

and resize the window to your satisfaction. Take some screenshots over time, and compare.

Maybe hardware / graphics acceleration issue. Two locations where you may throw a switch, experiment:

brave://settings/system

and

brave://flags/ - there, search for “accele” and:

Two switches that might apply:

  • Accelerated 2D canvas
  • Hardware-accelerated video encode

Extensions testing

  • Disable extensions; then test for issue
  • Enable extensions, one at a time, in order to individually test for issue
  • Enable combinations of extensions, in order to see which combinations of extensions will work without encountering the issue

Find processes that you have running on your Mac, that you do not need, and disable them.

Regularly clear cache as a routine.

Tips regarding Brave Shields:

I have more success, with:

  • Brave Shields UP
  • Either Allow All Cookies or Block 3rd Party Cookies, but NOT Blocking All Cookies
  • Allowing JavaScripts from specific sources, but NOT Allowing All JavaScripts
  • Trackers & Ads treatment: Aggressive (at first), and then incrementally relaxing that setting
  • Fingerprinting (aka footprinting) blocking: Strict (at first), and then incrementally relaxing that setting

I almost NEVER use:

  • All of Brave Shields UP
  • All of Brave Shields DOWN
