Brave Doesn't Recognize Profiles

My problem is the same as this one, which was not resolved: Lost My Brave Profiles

Forced restart after Windows update last week. Was logged out of all my accounts and today I notice my Brave profiles are “gone.” Gone in the sense I cannot access them, though the profile folders are still in the app data directory.

I also tried to create new profiles, but Brave hangs when I try to do that.

This isn’t a new problem. I’ve found many instances going back five years, but no solutions. There’s even a general post on the problem (which, of course, I can’t find now) mentioning the possibility it’s a Chrome issue and we’re on it! Except . . . no fix?

My question is: The profile folders are there. How do I get Brave to recognize them?
