Brave - black screen bug and ads issue

Description of the issues:

  1. When searching in the browser something and once the results show, after like 5 seconds the whole page becomes black and nothing can be seen. After the page becomes black I can still click on links and the website loads but in the search page, nothing can be seen.

  2. For the past days ads are back, on several websites

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Go on the search bar and type in something (e.g. YouTube)
  2. After search loads, wait for like 5 seconds
  3. Results page becomes fully black

Brave Version: 1.58.137 Chromium: 117.0.5938.153 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information: The issue with the black screen has been happening for quite some time now and it is very annoying. I have updated everything to the latest version on brave://components as seen in other posts. The issue still occurs

The issue with the ads has been happening for the past 2 days, I see other people having the same issue but I could not find a fix

To confirm, the behavior is simply running a search in the address bar of the browser, then ~5s after the results are displayed the page goes black — correct? If so, what search engine are you using where you see this behavior? What happens if you run a search on the search engine directly rather than through the address bar? Further, if you use a different search engine do you see this same behavior?

@Mattches Yes, that is correct. After the results are displayed and then after like 5s-7s the page becomes dark

This issue is happening when searching in both the address bar and the google search engine. Like mentioned by you I decided to switch from Google to a different search engine and it seems to be working for now. I guess that issue is happening only when using Google.

For now I will be using a different search engine - other than Google, but if you are able to provide a fix for these issues, that would be great. Thank you

The first thing I would recommend trying it clearing cache/site data for Google.com. Click the “tune” icon in the address bar next to the URL, then click Site settings --> Delete data. Reload the site and test again.

I’m also curious as to whether or not you see this same behavior when you search in Google using a private browsing window.

I clicked on the “Delete data” button - the issue is still there when using the Google search engine.

And yes, the same issue occurs when using the Google search engine in a private window

Apologies for letting your thread slip through the cracks. Out of curiosity, since we’ve had a few updates since we last talked, are you still seeing this issue after updating the the latest build (v1.59.124)?

Hi @Mattches Unfortunately, I am still able to replicate the issue using the Google search engine

Just to be sure, I updated brave://components and it still happened

When this issue occurs, can you please right-click on the page, select Inspect then go to the Console tab in the resulting dev tools window and share a screenshot of the output in the Console window with us here?

Can you tell please tell me if you have any extensions installed at this time? Additionally, can you please tell me if you get the same behavior after creating a new profile?

Hey @Mattches Yes I do have a few extensions, but I have had them since I started using Brave and before I have not seen this issue.

I created a few different testing accounts and I was still able to replicate the issue. (On one of them the issue didn’t occur :thinking:)

Yeah, I am stumbled as well by this. And no, I am not using any VPN
