Why do website speak to me in German if using Brave?

Hey guys, sorry to bother, have a quick one.

I’m basically happy with Brave but there is one thing which annoys me so much that is: website “believe” somehow I’m German and provide me with their page in German.

Trying to login to Google Auth with a third party software? Cool, the popup is displayed in German

Wanna login to say Yahoo? good, all strings turn to German (and I am native ITA and speak ENG and SPA so honestly I’m not even sure where this comes from)

Locale is set to Italian and English.

What else should I check?

Thanks!

Hello @marcofama

do you use vpn/proxy/tor ?

if yes then the server of the server or the exit node of tor are in germany

does yahoo change it’s language before login or after login?

Thanks for the quick one!

Question is: how do I know? Not using TOR or PROXY that’s for sure (if I browse with Chrome all is ok instead)… Not sure about the VPN but if I click on VPN in the upper right side of the browser I get a banner to enjoy a trial so I assume not?

you welcome @marcofama

then i assume you do not use any of those

if you go to brave://settings/languages under Preferred languages Websites in your languages is it english and italian there or german?

could you try in new private window and see if it work fine there or not
if it work fine then most probably it cache issue or one of your extensions causing the issue or either need to clear your cache/cookies or disable all extension then enable them one by one till you get the one causing it

hope some of those help and have a nice day

I checked the preferences you mentioned and have 4 languages, 3 times ENG and 1 ITA:
Shared with Droplr

I tried Private nav pointing to mail.yahoo.com as an example, and see this
https://d.pr/i/LPz4OI

like the system turns the URL to

so you see, lang=de-DE for example is appended automatically

I recall I have tried the VPN with Brave tho, in the past, do u know how I can check if it’s still active somehow / somewhere?

could you go to the menu then more tools then either add new profile or open guest profile
and without changing any setting see if it open yahoo as it should be or not

if it work then go to your normal profile and clear cache and cookies go to brave://settings/clearBrowserData and choose advanced then pick the all time and make sure cookies and cache is selected

and clear it then disable all extension and try again

to check if vpn is on go to https://www.whatismyip.com/
and check which location it report

hope that help and have a nice day

so first of all let me tell you that I am awesomely impressed by your kindness and the time you are dedicating me, please know that I truly appreciate it!

Guess what?

My IP Location:

Frankfurt am Main, HE DE

And I’m in Italy and the other browser reports nearby Milan which is way more accurate!!!

So Brave is somehow hijacking my traffic, rerouting through a proxy in Germany I’d lean to believe, am I wrong?!

Again, I believe the first days of my Brave tests I remember I managed to activate their free VPN and now I remember I was seen as from Germany from a site I couldn’t visit from ITA from my provider.

Could it be I never deactivated it? If so, where would I check the free VPN service from Brave is still on? I can’t find anything here

I found the “solution” or I should say the reason behind this.

And trust me, it’s totally absurd!!

It was not Brave’s free VPN but DuckDuckGo’s, which for some weird reason (don’t know why!!) it was active (although I’m not running at startup or using the browser at all)!!

Dear God… at least I found it, and that’s why I wanted to share with you all (you can never know if this happens in the future to others)

Mate, thank you from the bottom of my heart to give me the input I needed to figure this out.

Lots of love from Italy
