Blocking go-updater.brave.com and variations.brave.com wasn’t enough. Also had to block updates.bravesoftware.com and updates-cdn.bravesoftware.com. I could and may need to block brave.com, but then I couldn’t get here.
As a Brave and Bitwarden user I am working out a solution where I move my site shortcuts (those without logins) to Bitwarden and those with logins, I add a Note I can catch from the Search field. In other words…
I’ve set Bitwarden to activate the extension using ALT+A. So I press that.
I then type my own defined site shortcut keyword (added to the Note of the Bitwarden entry).
I then press TAB 4 times and ENTER to launch the site.
For sites without login, I’ve simply created an empty login entry with title, URL and a Note.
For me it works well using “:” + keyword so only the desired site(s) shows up.
For example: “:gm” results in my Gmail logins which I can then open pretty quickly.
I’m doing all this because it does not sound like this ‘bug’ / change is being 100% reverted. Brave may be doing it now but what about a year from now. There may be other, more important issues to tackle, just about anything with security and privacy.
IF you’re considering doing this as well and you’re not already a Bitwarden user (and therefore are about to create an account) I STRONGLY recommend that you read the following thread as this is a brand new security measure which, if not understood, can lead to issues accessing your vault!
Alt d works everywhere!
To summarize what is happening here:
-
While the “site search” feature does work, it does not have all the previous functionality it once had – namely, the site search shortcuts must be used as an actual search query, with the trailing
%s
attached to the URL. They can no longer be used as “pseudo-bookmarks” -
This functionality has been removed due to an upstream change in the underlying Chromium engine – that is, we at Brave did not intentionally remove this functionality.
-
While not impossible to reimplement, it would require a significant amount of work to maintain a patch for this without a fix/change from upstream. Please see @clifton’s reply on the related Github issue here.
-
We recommend users who feel strongly about this reach out to the Chromium team with their feedback on this change on the original issue here
-
There are some potential workarounds that can be used with existing functionality, although they are not exactly the same. I would personally recommend using the bookmarks bar for sites you visit regularly/that you would typically use this functionality for, make use of tab groups, and ensure that the
Bookmarks
option for autocomplete suggestions is enabled inSettings --> Appearance
so that if you stat typing in the name of one of your bookmarks, the site will be suggested as you type,
Just a small FYI, looks like they have a potential update coming where this would be resolved through Bookmarks. You can see what is said about it and a small demo at https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/44450#issuecomment-2716034265
I just tagged them in to try to see timeframe. I’m thinking they will do a quick uplift here where we can see it coming right along. But not sure ETA.
EDIT
Actually, looks like my assumption of a quick uplift may not be correct. They will be figuring it out but current thought seems to be to want to test it on Nightly/Beta first.
Guess we’ll just have to keep an eye out for it.
For sure, I will be keeping an eye on it and this looks really cool in demo. Thanks for that.
Also this feature will be there in chrome also or only in brave browser(mobile and desktop)?
And who is creating this feature chrome devs or brave devs?
Edit:
Please tell them also add a special characters too for those shortcut it will be helpful for the user to easily distinguish it.
HEY EVERYONE! I think I found a workaround with this Chrome Extension. It is called Web Aliases. I need to manually input all my Search shortcuts (which were a lot, but I realized that I didn’t need or use all of them, so it was good to purge/update). But this seems to work now! Glad that I can still use Brave…for now!
Sounds like a good catch.
