Screen turning off while watching videos on Brave... After the new update the screen turns off when watching a video on Brave.. I don't want to change my phone settings I want this issue to be fixed within the app

Let me start by saying thank you to the Brave team for all their work on this browser.

Even though this is Chromium based I appreciate the choices that have been provided to allow for a great user experience.

Recently I noticed as others on this thread the “Keep Alive / Open” Feature seems to have been modified.

I am on an SIM Locked Android Samsung S24 Ultra One UI version 6.1 running Android 14; Build/UP1A.231005.007 / Brave 1.75.180, Chromium 133.0.6943.126

The phone has a 30 second timeout (settings → Display)

Normally when I play you tube videos in the brave browser, the browser would prevent the phone from timing out and keep the screen on. it didn’t matter if I was in Fullscreen mode or not.

Recently the screen has started to time out and go off and the only way to change that is to increase the time out on the phone (not acceptable / impacts Device Security) or keep tapping the phone.

The video continues to play in the background with the screen off but there are times I would like to see the video while it is playing. I may have not noticed this earlier as I normally play music videos on YT in the background. So am not sure when this behavior started.

Playing the same video using Opera (Latest Version 87.6.4607.83252) works fine. So I assume it is not an underlying Chromium issue.

Hope this can be resolved quickly as I really like the Brave Browser.

Thanks Again for all that you guys do.

Same here too.
Screen locks after 60s watching YouTube.

Happy to put up with it for now, tapping the screen every 30s - still better than watching ads! Thanks for looking into this dev team!

Same issue, Pixel Tablet, v1.75.180, Android 15.
Turned off adaptive brightness, continually close and you Brave, happens constantly.

The bug is still present in Brave 1.75.180, Chromium 133.0.6943.126.
To me it looks like it doesn’t tell to the system to inhibit turning off the screen.

I found that by putting it on desktop site stops your screen from turning off.

Same problem here. I use Brave for Ubuntu in my laptop and today the screen turned off while watching Youtube videos. It never happened before. Did anybody find a solution?
Brave Version 1.75.181 Chromium: 133.0.6943.141 (Official Build) (64-bit)
UPDATE: after closing it, cleaning the cache and turning off graphics acceleration, Brave is working without problems right now.

Super excited to try this, then realised I had already changed it to desktop mode :sad_but_relieved_face:

I found the fixed the issue for me & I hope that will help you too & help the developers to pinpoint the issue so that it can be fixed in the next update.

Simply all you have to do is the following:
go to your App Info> Battery> select unrestricted , after doing that all you have to do is close your app & clear its cache.

After opening the app on a video tap, you will see a notification for a quick second below that says something around “block turn off screen while watching video … undo
Whatever you do DON’T click UNDO & let the notification disappear in peace & no need to worry doing this will not activate your camera while watching videos.

For developers, it appears at least for me that this issue is tied to one of the settings that it changes based on if the app is battery optimized or unrestricted, I hope you find that setting & fix it soon or make a toggle for it in your app settings.

It happened to me too today. Everything was working fine since I started using Brave and then all of the sudden today I cannot watch any video, the screen shuts off after a little while and I have to touch the screen all the time to keep it on. That’s how I ended up here. I tried turning off adaptive brightness, starting new tabs, Autoplay in Site settings was already on. Finally good old fashioned Force stop app helped things go back to normal.

Hey! I was very annoyed with this issue and your tip did the trick for me.
I closed the app, launched it again and the phone did not lock while watching YouTube.
Thanks!!!

Same bug here with Brave 1.75.181, Chromium 133.0.6943.141
I have rebooted the phone to no avail. It started dimming the screen right after 2 mins of video playing, the app wasn’t in the background.
I’ll install a pending system update and look if there is a Brave update.
