New Tab Extensions Don't Work?

Description of the issue: I download an extension to change the new tab of chrome and it still defaults to Brave’s new tab, I’ve tried several different types of new tab extensions and none worked, but all works on Chrome.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary):

  1. Download the extension here (Or any new tab extension)
  2. Create a new tab
  3. Still the same

Actual Result: https://primi.gg/i/fjzu0.gif

Expected result: To give me a different new tab other than the default Brave’s new tab.

Reproduces how often: Every time.

Brave Version: 0.56.15 Chromium: 70.0.3538.110 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Reproducible on the current live release: Yes

Additional Information: I have tried the following - looking in settings, restarting, different extensions, and restarting.

Hi @primi, thanks for the report. This is known, and is due to the current version of Brave overriding the behavior of the new tab extension API for our stats dashboard.

There may be a Github issue for this (cc’ing @mattches and @sriram). For some background, this issue came to the fore during a recent hackathon, as some hackathon teams attempted to build “new tab” extensions for Brave.

@primi @chriscat logged issue here https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/993

The fix will be available on 0.58.x release. :slightly_smiling_face:

@primi,
Both the lovely gentleman above are correct, but just thought I’d mention that the fix is out in the Beta build right now, if you want to skip the wait :slight_smile:

I’m trying the beta to skip the wait and it still has the same issue, no change. How long do you think the wait is? :confused:

@primi
That’s my bad!
Will be out in Beta in the next couple of days - I had it in my head that Beta updated today along with our release build but it did not.

Infinite apologies!
