Local file shows source code instead of web content

I downloaded a web site. The remote web pages do NOT have the HTML file extensions. When I open the file locally i.e. file://afoopage, it shows the SOURCE CODE of the page in lieu of the web page content as it does when opened remotely.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. open a standard HTML without any file extension.

Expected result:
you SHOULD see a normal web page, not the source code.
