How do I restore session (not recently closed tabs)?

How do I restore session (not recently closed tabs)?
I searched and most of the answers were pertaining to recently closed tabs and history.
Am trying to find an actual session(s) that was (were) closed when I didn’t accept the “restore session” notification pop up in the top right corner.
Thanks again.

Kind regards
C_Sobi

Found the below Chromium Code article which may help. I do not know if this is the most current information available. Looks like only two (current and previous) sessions are saved. Older sessions are deleted. I looked at the User Data/Sessions folders in my profiles and only two files of each are stored, so probably still applies. I guess if you are tech savvy (or just want to do it manually), you could write a batch file to save the files created in the Sessions folder(s) so that you could have earlier versions.

Hope this helps. Take care. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for the reply @Chocoholic.
After checking the link I try to look for the “profileDir” which mention that the session should be part of a group yet I couldn’t locate it on my hard drive paths.
Only could located this:
C:\Users\PCname\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser-Beta\User Data\Default\Session Storage

Which had a named “CURRENT” with a size of 1 kb
Also, that article maybe for chrome users. How did you restore yours after missing the restore notification upon starting Brave?
I’ve attached a link at the bottom here.

I have both Session Storage and Sessions folders in all my profiles on all versions of Brave (Release, Beta, Nightly). Snipped an example from the Default profile in my Release version.

I am on win10 and my Brave Beta version is 1.48.141. Can you please post your OS and Brave versions. You can find this information at brave://version.

Unfortunately, if you do not have a Sessions folder, I do not know if you can restore using the information available in the Session Storage folder. Do you happen to have a backup of your User Data folder? If so, you can check to see if you have a Sessions folder in the backup and just copy and paste it into your Default folder.

Sorry I can’t offer any other suggestions. I do not know why you do not have a Sessions folder in your Default profile. I also do not know if you can restore using the information in the Session Storage folder. Maybe another community member will pop in and help. Otherwise, you could tag Brave support for help.

Posting a link to what appears to be a popular program that can help you save sessions that you may want to check out. Can’t help now but may be useful in the future.

Hello @C_Sobi

plus what @Chocoholic said

are you sure you did not clear cache/history on exit

also do you mean the sessions folder is not exist or it’s empty?

My current Brave-Beta version is: 1.48.141
And I did find the “session” folder which is different than the Session Storage which I posted the latter’s content of.
I’m afraid to close the browser in fear of losing those files and sites.
Although I may have to go to history and manually click each so that is what I’m going to do as I can back up the folder because Brave-Beta is on.

Thanks for the help and will try to drag them to the browser once I get the sites.
And will report back on the outcome “fingers crossed” lol.

So upon closing it did remove the session file but I back it up and so I believe it is the larger file. Posted below. Yet when I drag it to the browser and the other files it tries to download the same file. How would I load the session onto Brave so that it loads the session like the “Restore pages” notification at the start of starting the browser?

@C_Sobi To confirm, you did copy and save the files in your Sessions folder. If you have those saved, then all you need to do is:

  1. Open Browser
  2. Open Task Manager
  3. End the Browser app in Task Manager
  4. Go to the Sessions folder and delete all the Session and Tab files in the folder
  5. Copy/paste the Session and Tab file you previously saved and that you want to restore
  6. Open the Browser and you should get a restore prompt.

Hope this helps. Please post an update. Take care. :slightly_smiling_face:

plus what @Chocoholic said

i would copy the content of the whole folder not just some of it

and in case the restore prompt did not show up you have 2 options

  1. right click on any tab then choose reopen closed tab

  2. go to menu then history and choose what ever you like from there

@C_Sobi You are freely welcome to any help I can provide at any time! I am just glad it worked! That was a big session file.

@justsomeone1 Thank-you too for adding the extra details.

Take care both of you. :slightly_smiling_face:

congratulations @C_Sobi

and just an advice do not relay on that way cause if for any reason that file corrupted then you will face a lot of issue so use bookmark to save tabs maybe create folder on the bookmark manager and name it last session and save all open tabs there

and for password either use the password manager of brave or any password manager you like

and of course backup those bookmarks and passwords

thanks for you @Chocoholic

thanks a lot and you too

  1. Is there an absolute guarantee that if I close my current session, and then paste the files from my previous session into those folders, it’ll restore them and the current one won’t be lost?

(My current session is a saved part of the session that I lost - 26 out of 32 windows.)

  1. Is there a way to find the pre-previous session files in some way - some backup reachable via TotalCommander or something?

I just had the malware “Searchgoose” change my browsers’ settings (Brave as well as Edge) from “open previous session” to “open this page: Searchgoose” and then auto-close the Browsers.

So when I re-opened them and restored the sessions (Brave: restored 30 out of the previously 32 windows), I then foolishly decided to restart the computer;

then I managed to only retrieve 26 windows from the “Recently Closed” list.

So my “previous session” would be the ones with the 30 windows (MAYBE I could restore the other 2 via “Recently Closed”, don’t know atm though).
Whereas the “pre-previous” one would be the one with the 32 windows - i.e. how it was just yesterday, before this malware problem.

Is there any way?
And are there any ways to fish out the 6 more “Recently Closed” windows no longer showing up on the History list - somewhere in the files or backups?

Thank you!

Hello @SearchgooseDamage

my understanding to what @Chocoholic shared that those files hold the current and previous session

there nothing i see to be absolute guarantee cause there many things in the game here like file get corrupted - virus - even bug in the chrome part

the only way i can think off that you use some app that search your storage for deleted file and it undo it but it will cost a lot of time and it could fail cause it success depend on that the location of the file on your storage did not overwritten by a new data even partial over wright would make the file lost

before doing anything bookmark them all

do you mean you went to brave://history/ and those links did not show up there?

are you sure you did not clear your history?

hope @Chocoholic help us here and correct me if i miss understand anything

and have a nice day both of you

Yes - I didn’t clear the History or do anything with it;

if anything somehow did get deleted from the History, that would be the Malware’s doing - otherwise, it seems like the “Recently Closed” list can only hold 26 items (whether tabs or windows), and I had 30 in the previous session, and 32 in the pre-previous session.

So I restored the 26, one by one, and after that it was empty (and still is).

Is there no “extended list” anywhere in the files?

Also, do those previous “session” folders/files also contain the “Recently Closed” list that was available during that session?

Or is the “history” stored completely independently, and the 2nd irregular closing of Brave simply displaced those earlier “Recently Closed” items with the current ones that were all closed?

And man damn it, I REALLY should’ve saved Sessions + Session Storage yesterday before (or even instead of) restarting the computer - it was so close within grasp, the full undamaged sessions for both Brave and Edge.

session folder hold

  1. tabs for your current session and previous one that how brave know which tabs to open when you select Continue where you left off

  2. session data so when you go to certain site you find your self still logged in

but

history hold all sites you visit up to 3 months

but it save link to pages you visit so you will need to re login if that required

history and session folder data affected by clearing your history

so not sure if there other way but let me ask @JimB1 and @Saoiray if they has another way

start from here guys

and have a nice day all of you
