I run Unifi Protect security cameras, and the cameras recently had an update that allowed the use of the HEVC codec to record with and also view the live feed with. It’s great on iOS through their own app, but on the web browser only browsers that support HEVC will be able to play. Brave seems to be unable to play them as such.
Steps to reproduce
Open up Protect Web App or any site that uses HEVC/h265
Cameras all report that the browser cannot playback the video, or no video shows at all
Expected result: Video playback
Brave Version: 1.168.134
Additional Information: Already found a command switch to put into the application shortcut, however it doesn’t work. --enable-features=PlatformHEVCEncoderSupport
@cmdshft if you test on Chrome, does it work? I was just trying to do some research and I was seeing claims it’s only partially supported on chromium browsers so far. If so, I’m thinking this may be more of an upstream thing that would have to be handled.
If it does work, then I’d return and start doing some basic troubleshooting within Brave, which would be things like doing each step separately and see if there any change.
Disable Shields
Open in private window
Create a second browser profile and test on it with no extensions or changes to settings
@cmdshft yeah, the intent in using Beta and/or Nightly is to help see if perhaps an issue gets resolved. Beta would be what will arrive here to the normal Brave (Release) version. So if it works on Beta, it gives hope that it’s something that gets fixed in chromium or Brave for an upcoming release.
That said, if you also tried Nightly and it didn’t work, then that also provides some information about something that gets changed yet again which might break it. Not sure if you’re saying you tried that or only tried on Beta?
Regardless, I’ll tag in @Mattches to see if he has any idea on HEVC support on Brave and if has any ideas whether whatever allows for support in Beta should definitely be hitting Release or what’s going on
I did manage to resolve this, though. I completely removed Brave (and the browsing data, after backing up passwords to CSV) and reinstalled and it’s working as expected. Not really sure what caused it to break as I have not been using Brave for longer than a few months already. But, it is working none the less.
