When I close all my open Brave tabs, an old file download (course syllabus) keeps opening. Also, the file link to my school is in the browser space. I keep closing it but every time I use Brave it opens. How do I fix this?

Can you confirm what you mean when you say:
Do you mean that when you open the browser, you see this URL in the address bar? If so, is the site itself open, or does the New tab page open with that URL in the address bar?
The first thing to check is to ensure that you didn’t somehow set this site to open when you launch Brave — you can check this by going to Settings --> Get started and confirm that that the option (shown in the image below) is not selected and/or that that URL is not one of the pages set to open:
If that is not the case, then the next thing I would try is clearing your browsers cached images and files and your download history — optionally, you can also select Cookies and other site data to clear as well, although that will clear any cookies you have set in the browser and you will likely need to log back into your accounts. Please go to Settings --> History --> Clear browsing data --> Advanced and select All time for the time range, and check the boxes mentioned above (as shown in the image), then Clear data:
