Could Brave Make Electron Development for iOS and Android Possible?

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if Brave has any plans to help make iOS / Android app development possible, using electron / node.js.

I recently discovered electron and am thrilled with the idea of cross platform application development for desktop. I keep thinking how great it would be to use electron to develop iOS/Android apps however, in searching the Internet I read that Chromium would be needed on the mobile device.

I then came across the VentureBeat.com article entitled “Mozilla cofounder Brendan Eich’s startup, Brave, launches browser for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android” by Jordan N.

Needless to say, I found this rather encouraging. And from what I can tell, it would appear that the Brave team has embraced Chromium!

That electron apps are generally responsive and can run without Internet certainly lends them to uses in development for mobile. It would be exciting to be able to code once and deploy not only to desktop (Mac/Win/Linux), but to mobile (iOS/Android) as well.

Could Brave make electron development for iOS and Android Possible?

Thanks for your consideration,
Roark

We actually have iOS and Android apps available.

We wouldn’t do electron on those platforms for a number of reasons, but if you want to pitch in on any of them I’m sure the teams would appreciate it!

Hey Alex,

I would be curious to know the reasons because from my limited knowledge, if there is a Chromium browser on the device, electron should be good to go!

I was very excited to learn about Brave yesterday because it seemed to me that if in fact it is a Chromium browser, that this would mean I would be able to use electron to develop apps for iOS and Android!

I have tried developing apps for Android and iOS and have found it to be rather tedious, and with a steep learning curve (think Objective-C or now Swift, X-Code on Mac, or Java and Eclipse on Windows). It’s true there are alternatives such as Xamarin and Xojo, but here again, there is the learning curve, and the costly monthly fees!

If Brave can somehow break through this “barrier” and make electron app development possible on iOS and/or Android, I think this could make Brave’s popularity EXPLODE in the development community, and beyond.

I’m just sayin’,
Roark

I guess they do already have same features via different medium.
