Cannot sync or view passwords because Brave doesn't recognize screen lock on Chrome OS

Description of the issue:
I have password and PIN enabled for logging into the chromebook and to access it after awakening it from sleep. However Brave Browser installed through the Google Play Store appears to think that my device is not protected by a screenlock/PIN.

Brave Web Browser (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brave.browser ) allows you to view the stored passwords and copy them. However, when I try to do the same in my chromebook, it says “to view passwords, first set a screen lock on the device”. If I try to export passwords, it says “Turn on screen lock in Settings, to export passwords from this device”

As I mentioned earlier, the chromebook has screen lock through password or PIN turned on. Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated.

**Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary):

  1. Install Brave Web Browser Android App on any Chromebook
  2. Try to view the saved passwords through Settings → Passwords → Click on a saved password of any website
  3. Click the ‘eye’ button to view the password

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):

Expected result:
Message saying “to view passwords, first set a screen lock on the device”

Reproduces how often:
Always

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
Chrome OS Version 123.0.6312.132 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Brave 1.65.114, Chromium 124.0.6367.60
Android 11; Build/R123-15786.58.0

This has been written up many times in the last 3 years, no answer has been provided. Please fix this!

this seems to have been required / inquired for some time, already  /search?q=passwords%20chromebook

I can also confirm.
Brave 1.65.122, Chromium 124.0.6367.82, Android 13 R123-15786.60.0, ChromeOS 123.0.6312.134 (64-bit)

Is anyone willing to acknowledge and work on this error?

Anyone have anything to add here?

Is this being worked?

Any progress? Brave seems pretty broken on Chrome OS.

I’m getting the feeling that Brave doesn’t care about Chrome OS. That’s a shame - if I can’t use it on all of my devices, why would I use it on any of them?

@HuCo, I understand the frustration, but it’s important to know that this issue is being actively worked on. There are multiple topics and issues open on this, and it’s always helpful to look around for similar posts to stay updated. For example:

Some users have even reported progress:

There has been movement on this, and the team is addressing the issue. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on these updates.

And yes, it’s looking into and resolving for both Chrome OS and Android, as the issue occurred for both. It’s related to changes made by Google/Android.

any update on this? maybe?

This is probably impossible, as Chrome OS emulates Android apps in a sandboxed environment. None of the Android apps can see the full system information, therefore explaining why none of the Android apps recognise screen locks on Chrome OS.

@coro1404 simply put, it seems not to happen in 1.70.xx or later. Anyone using Beta or Nightly are saying no issue. I think we’re just pretty much stuck waiting for 1.70 to land on Release (the normal version of the browser).

Going based on https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/wiki/Brave-Release-Schedule it seems that would land around September 17. But I’m not sure if we can get @clifton or others to perhaps try to push to get it uplifted sooner.

I guess can also try to tag in @Alexey as one of the primary people I’m aware of that is a dev for sync. They did share on one of the other Github similar to what I mentioned above, which is can’t replicate it on Beta or Nightly:

Btw, @HuCo @ubik @modernhistorian just want to ping you all in again. If you grabbed Brave Beta and/or Brave Nightly, can you confirm that it seems to work for you?

I’m willing to try - where can I grab an APK of the beta or nightly?

HuCo

@HuCo umm, trying to think of the right answer (I’m hesitating just due to the way you phrased the question). Beta and Nightly are both available in the same way you get Release. Not sure if you used Play Store or installed a different way. But if via Play Store, just search for Brave Beta or Brave Nightly on Play Store and you’ll see it. For desktop, which I’m pretty sure wouldn’t be, you’d just go to https://brave.com/download-beta or https://brave.com/download-nightly/

I’m assuming you likely used Play Store, in which case you can ignore the info below. But if you didn’t and going about it the “harder” way, then you can kind of take your pick from any that are 1.70 or later at https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases

An example of one might be https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v1.70.94 but regardless, you’d go to where it shows Assets and could grab from it. But you’d need to know which one is suitable for your particular device architecture.

Got it, downloading now.

I didn’t think they were up in the Play store, but I found them.

Thanks, I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.

Nope, still won’t turn on password sync using Beta. Same error message, no prompt to enter screen lock. See attached screenshot. I’ll try the nightly and report back.

Also no luck with the nightly build. Same error, unable to sync passwords. See screenshot.

Same problem here. I can’t see my passwords that have been synced already because Brave wants the “screen lock” on. (Obviously this was not a problem on earlier versions of Brave/ChromeOS).
I installed Brave Beta - and can’t enable sync because it wants to have screen lock on.
Between ChromeOS and Brave not playing nice, this is a right old mess.
(Note that I also wasn’t able to log into this community website in Brave using Brave’s password manager on ChromeOS. I’'ll just pretend that never happened… I got what I paid for it - not a whole lot!!)
