fed up with brave 1.3.113 crashing on launch
where until today it was fine … on Ubuntu 20.04
I took the nuclear option and purged the ubuntu package then deleted dir ~/.cache/BraveSoftware … I lost everything meaning login passwords, forms, etc … all things which should be in sync which cannot since sync currently fails to stow those … at least now after reinstall it no longer crashes on launch … this is exactly where browsers were back in the 90’s ;-)))
I just updated the browser few minutes ago and it crashes after launch. If i try to open it from the terminal i get:

We can see that there are a lot of people with this problem after the last update, will there be a fix?
POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/ROOT CAUSE
Pretty sure I “fixed” this. Disabling Sync has stopped brave nightly build from crashing, it seems. Couldn’t run for more than 1-2 minutes before. Now running for about 10, all systems normal.
The solution is to downgrade. STEPS BELOW:
If you have synaptic installed on your system, here is what should work.
Launch synaptic (you will probably be prompted for your password)
Click on Search and search for brave - you should find brave-browser
Click on the brave-browser entry
On the menu select Package and then Force version…
From the dialog presented you can pick from the available versions. 1.2.43 should be listed
Click on Force Version which will close the dialog.
On the menu click Apply, answer Apply on the dialog which comes up and the old package will be downloaded and installed in place of the defective version
Finally select the brave-browser line in the list, Click Package on the menu and select Lock version. That will hold brave at 1.2.43 until you uncheck Lock version.
Those are the steps in synaptic on Linux Mint. The steps should be the same on Kubuntu.
Yessir, on nightlies, start a new sync, browser crashes!
Can’t submit crash logs from two different computers. Where are they? I’ll upload manually
I removed this machine from a 3-way sync chain and Brave has now been stable for over 10 minutes
mrblack’s solution worked for me.
Neither downgrading nor leaving a sync chain works for me. The previous version was already crashing and I’ve just left the sync chain I had and Brave still crashed within 2 minutes.
mrblack’s solution worked for me, except that I had to downgrade to Brave 1.2.41 for the crashes to stop. Thanks for posting.

The crashes you are all encountering are likely caused by the same known issue with Brave Sync that the team is currently addressing. Please see here for more information as well as how/where to download a hot fix update to resolve the crashing issues:

Also crashes in a Private Window
After many happy months using Brave I just had to switch back to Firefox because Brave was completely unusable. It kept on crashing after a random amount of time of usage, somewhere between 2 and 15 minutes.
Version 1.3.115 Chromium: 80.0.3987.87 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Every time it crashes, it becomes unresponsive and it makes other applications unresponsive as well (even the Terminal!). I am using Intel graphics drivers on an NVidia graphic card that comes with my Dell XPS 15".
Worth mentioning that 2 or 3 versions before it was working well but I don’t know what that version was.
I’m on Ubuntu 19.04.
I just installed and launched Brave version 1.4.95 for Linux. Because Brave crashed and closed itself the last time I opened it, I restored the previous session.
Soon afterward, I had to step away from the computer. When I came back after some minutes, all the Brave tabs were still open. However, when I started to scroll down and use the browser, Brave closed on me within a few seconds.
Same as @Cybertooth. Installed 1.4.95. Left it on this community page and walked away for a couple of minutes. Came back and watched as it crashed again.
Brave version 1.4.96 for Linux, which I just downloaded and installed, also closed by itself within one minute of opening it.
Ditto the above. Same test as before. Installed 1.4.96 and left Brave open on this page and it crashed within about a minute again with no further interaction required.
@infidelus (and anybody else having this problem with Brave), by any chance are you using ESET NOD32 for Linux on your affected computer?
I am, and while looking into this issue I happened to come across this discussion on the ESET forum. It’s a long thread, but note that their problem with Chromium crashing started right around the time that our problem with Brave did (or at least in my case, anyway).
The good news is that the problem apparently has been identified as some kind of incompatibility between ESET for Linux and Chromium-based browsers. The bad news is that unless the issue gets fixed, users of ESET for Linux will have to choose between doing without a current version of Chromium/Brave or doing without ESET for Linux. Not as easy a choice as it sounds, since I installed ESET on Linux as a layer of protection for the Windows PCs that are on my network.
ADDITION: I forgot to mention that, as a test, I uninstalled ESET for Linux, rebooted, and launched Brave 1.4.96. It’s working great.
