Brave wallet vs rewards - why do we need an external partner, and not Brave Wallet?

Hello,

I would like to understand if i can use the brave wallet to get my rewards?
Why do i need an external party such a Gemini to get the rewards? What is the point of the Brave wallet if i cannot even use it “internally” - to manage BAT rewards on brave?

Verification for withdrawal is required with one of our custodial partners due to KYC/AML requirements for specific regions. You can learn more here: https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360032158891-What-is-KYC-

Thank you for your understanding.

On top of what Evan mentioned, I’ll link you to old Github about it that’s still fairly relevant. Just have to understand a lot of regulations and info from Themis has kind of changed things, but it still holds true.

https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/wiki/Wallet-support-FAQ#why-cant-my-wallet-receive-my-rewards-how-about-tipping-from-my-wallet

BAT Rewards come in the form of virtual BAT (vBAT) until you verify with an exchange. When you verify with an exchange, your vBAT gets deposited there and converted to real BAT. The step for going to an exchange is required for AML/KYC reasons. We’re looking at the decentralization process for Brave ads rewards as part of Themis

Brave Wallet is a self custody wallet and therefore we cannot currently pay to it for the user rev-share for ads. We would need to KYC/AML your address and may also need a money transmitter license to do so.

For tipping, we are planning to implement on-chain P2P tipping. There are some things to work through including high Ethereum gas fees and no anonymity on Ethereum. After we have Solana support we will likely add this pretty quickly.

P2P tipping is actually going to arrive next year. So will Pay With BAT and a lot of other little things. However, KYC/AML is still going to be required and Brave will continue using custodial partners.

Hey Evan and Stephen,

Thank you for your replied. I got it, that Brave cannot send BATs to non-KYC wallets, because regulations.
ps. Until this whole storm passes i will keep my "Bat"s unverified locally. Hope my browser won’t crash
Thanks,
Szilard
