After nearly three years, I’m about to permanently delete Brave. It now ALWAYS opens with a private tab, and all the tabs I keep open are lost. Settings | Shields & Privacy, Private Browsing Only is OFF, but Brave still opens in Private mode. If I set Private mode to ON, then to Off, it will "confirm and then continue to show a the blank tab in private mode, then confirm again and switch then show a blank tab in regular mode. (Sometimes it restore my tabs, but mostly not.)
This behavior began sometime in Feb/Mar 2024.
Brave is launched from the icon on the home screen.
What do you mean confirm? There is no confirm button or anything in regards to exiting Private. There is a little window that appears when we enter Private, such as below:
And confirming from that will put you into Private, as below. You would open whatever windows and surf how you please. When done, you hit the Private button on the bottom left of this menu, which we see below
While I could assume you meant the Done button or something, I’ve learned to ask questions and clarify. Doing so has often been a help to me or others on finding solutions and helps us make sure there’s no misunderstandings.
Other thing I’m going to ask you to check. If you go to Settings → Private Tabs, do you have the setting enabled for Keep Private Tabs? I’m assuming that has absolutely nothing to do with your situation, but it’s just one of the random things to consider. I keep it toggled off and am hoping yours is as well, but if you have it on I’ll see if you can test if disabling it changes what you’re experiencing.
Why don’t you update? Current is 1.66. It released a couple days ago.
Thank you for the detailed reply. I do very much appreciate your help.
These are successive screens as I : 1) open Brave on my iPad - it opens in Private Browsing mode. 2) the switch is NOT set for private browsing, changing it to private browsing displays the Confirmation box. 3) After confirming, Brave remains in private browsing mode. 4) Switching back changes Brave to regular browsing opens a single empty tab - my previous tabs are all gone.
My screens don’t appear like your samples at all. No Private link.
I checked Settings | Private Tabs | Keep Private Tabs is OFF.
I had just updated to 1.65. Have now gone to 1.66 (113) – behavior is the same. The new update started up in Private Mode… (sigh)
It would be nice to toggle Private from the UI somewhere, but there doesn’t appear to be anything that does this in the iPad version of Brave. (Nor could I discover anything that would turn it on in the menus.)
Having to navigate through all the steps in the menus to get out of Private Browsing, and then to lose the tabs anyway is getting tedious.
Are you unable to enter the screen I shared? To do that you click on tab switcher, which is that square box with a number. The number being how many open tabs you have.
If it operates like iPhone at all, the toggle for Private is there.
The method you’re using definitely isn’t the way you should be toggling and might help explain what’s going on. But challenge for me will be walking through with you to see if iPad works more like phone or desktop. I’m wanting to say I recall it being very similar to iPhone.
