Voice dictation in Google docs on macOS does not work

When editing a Google doc (docs.google.com/…), the dictation feature does not work, either via the keyboard shortcut or Brave menu “Edit > Start dictation.“ The microphone display does not appear. Voice dictation on other sites, address bar, etc. do work.

This is true both on my Mac mini and MacBook Pro. I recall that dictation once worked and does so when editing Google slides. I have restarted and rebooted both my Macs.

I use voice dictation quite frequently, so this is problematic for me.
