Description of the issue:
When searching via DuckDuckGo for “MacRumors” (URL next) I see an ad at the top of the page “Top 10 Mac Cleaners 2020”. I do not have uBlock Origin installed in Brave. With Chrome and uBlock Origin installed I do not see the “Top 10 Mac Cleaners 2020” ad.
Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off?
Yes. Is there a specific Shields configuration that causes the site to break? If so, tell us that configuration. (yes/no):
No
Does the site work as expected when using Chrome?
Yes. Using Chrome with uBlock Origin installed I am not seeing the “Top 10 Mac Cleaners 2020” ad at the top. Brave version (check About Brave): Version 1.7.98 Chromium: 81.0.4044.113 (Official Build) (64-bit)
hi @JMOnlineiOS
what I understand so far is that brave blocks third party ads, a third party ad is an ad that came from a different server from the one that is hosting the site you are viewing.
and there are those ads called first party ads, that are served from the same site you are visiting so brave does not block them.
with that said, there will be some cases when a site can show you ads like duckduck go, but based in my experience they are not as annoying as those third party ads, so I tolerate them without much problem.
and for ddg sometimes showing ads, it’s because ddg only show ads when they match your search query. Brave ads follows a similar principle.
well, i hope this help you a bit whit your question, I think @Aa-ron, @Mattches or someone of the other brave dev can give you a better explanation
Good point. I did not know about the third party vs first party ads. It does make sense though. The ad that I got wasn’t over the top. It was actually related to my query, in a way. So the ad wasn’t a nuisance to see. But the explanation on why brave didn’t block the ad makes sense. Thank you
@fanboynz@Mattches@JMOnlineiOS@JohnDproof I see the same thing and I have ads disabled in DDG settings. When I disable “Instant Answers” in DDG settings that image doesn’t appear. So is it considered an ad or a quick relevant search result?
