Lost icons within Gmail

I use Gmail within the Brave browser

After restarting Brave, having updated to Version 1.42.88 Chromium: 104.0.5112.81 (Official Build) (64-bit), I have lost the icons that sit in a row above my list of emails. If I mouse over the blank area I see the text popping up explaining the icon - delete, mark as read, report as spam etc but no icon is visible.
The icons were visible immediately before the restart,
