Using Chrome on Ubuntu Linux, when I select either “Download Brave” button, a tiny, 2-line high window opens with the instructions. I was able to click in that window and select all and copy and paste elsewhere.

Hmm, those are the Terminal instructions to install on Linux but 1 - We have ours on readthedocs and 2 - as @eljuno just said, that is not an official website to my knowledge. Did you download/install anything from that site on your machine?

Yeah I actually read the URL wrong – that is Brave owned.
Are you sure Brave owned bravesoftware.com @Mattches?
To me, seems like the domain owner only redirect bravesoftware.com to brave.com.
