Address Bar Calculator Limit

Description of the issue:
When typing a calculation in the address bar (I use Google search), it used to always show the answer. Now, some of the time, it doesn’t, especially for longer queries. This functionality still works all the time in Chrome. I’m on MacOS.

Another user reported this issue in 2 months ago here:

It was closed without a response.

In case this needs further defending, I don’t want to fill up my address bar history & search history with all these random calculations. Something weird is happening.

How can this issue be reproduced?

It seems the threshold is 8 digits, strangely. If the calculation involves <8 digits, Brave address bar will autocomplete it. If >=8 digits, it won’t.

  1. Set Google as your search provider.
  2. Try the following calculations in the address bar:
    1111+111 → shows answer (7 digits)
    1111+1111 → doesn’t show answer (8 digits)
    1+1+1+1+1+1+1 → shows answer (7 digits)
    1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 → doesn’t show answer (8 digits)

But all of these calculations show an answer in Chrome.

Brave Version:
Version 1.73.101
Chromium: 131.0.6778.139 (Official Build) (arm64)

Suggestion:

Use the search engine’s search field, instead of the URL address field.

Be Prepared

Clear cookies, cache, history, etc.

In a Brave Browser New Window, go to:

brave://settings/clearBrowserData

Select the Advanced tab

Set Time range to “All time”

ENABLE everything except:

  • Passwords and other sign-in data

(Myself, I would NOT make that exception)
(because I would have a backup prepared.)
(In other words, be prepared.)

Click on the “Clear data” button
