Youtube videos automatically playing in background

After 24 hours after disabling the media controls, the occurrence has gone down, but this still happens. Before it would occur about 3 or 4 times every 20+ minutes. Now I have experienced it twice in total in like an hour. Still very annoying.

Can anyone here on Windows, upload a video of this when it happens? This is a screen recorder app in Windows Store- https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9N27GQ6MLS5S and with default settings, it grabs audio & video in mp4 (select Brave’s window for recording). A 10-15 second video should have the uploadable size (4 MB).

You can use hotkeys from settings to start/stop recording without switching applications while the app is running.

Encountered the same problem opened youtube and even tho im playing another youtube video or not in the browser and click i start a completely new video i go back one page and it disapeares

A update here, I disabled my extensions along with the global media controls and reset my settings for brave browser and it seems to work fine for me now. So far I haven’t encountered the problem again. I hope it helps.

Can someone make a short video on how to do all these things? That would help. Thanks.

Hi everyone,

I’m facing the exact same issue as mentioned by the others.

Out of the blue a Youtube video is launched in the background. I just checked my youtube history, and it’s dozens of videos that are played every day (most of them for only 1second so I don’t even hear them, sometimes several at the same time for 10-20sec, sometimes videos are fully watched even though I didn’t hear them at all [this probably occurs when I turn of a tab’s sound]).
Screenshot of my YT history (only videos I didn’t watch) :

I tried to solve the issue with what @Mattches told to do, but it’s not working

I also tried to record a video of my screen, but as soon as I launch the recording, the sound stops.

I’m using some extensions but I don’t see why it would be linked to any of them (see screenshot below)

Any help would be great cause it’s very annoying

@Platifurax,
If you disable your extensions (or create a test profile) do you still see the behavior?

This is now happening more. Before it was playing random videos from people I follow, but now it is playing random videos in other languages as well. This was just now when I was watching one video and TWO videos started playing at the same time:

Because of this latest issue, I will have to uninstall Brave as my wife just screamed because the video that started playing was so loud that it scared both of us. Brave is completely unusable until this is fixed.

For anyone here encountering this issue, I understand that it must be super annoying and would like to work with you to resolve the issue. That said, given the variety in reports here — some solutions work for some people but not everyone, etc — and the fact that no one on the team can reproduce this issue, I would like for anyone experiencing this to test the following solutions and confirm whether or not any of them worked:

  • Disabling the #global-media-controls flag in brave://flags (requires a browser restart to take effect).
  • Disabling any installed extensions temporarily in your main profile (or whatever profile is producing this issue) and testing to see if you can reproduce the issue.
  • Creating a new temporary profile and trying to reproduce the issue using that profile (please ensure you only have one browser window open — the one using the newly created profile — when performing this test).

Gathering this data will help us narrow down possible causes and get to the root of the issue. Thank you for your patience and understanding and I do apologize for obvious annoyance/inconvenience this is causing.

I guess this has been happening while I was away from my computer. I just looked into my Youtube history and found this:

Most of these videos are nothing close to the things I normally watch.

I don’t have that many extensions to start with and none that play video:

Uninstalling and reinstalling certainly did not work.

How do you create a new profile to help you test, @Mattches? Uninstalling and reinstalling definitely did not work. And unfortunately, I have so much stuff into Brave that switching back to Chrome was very difficult.

Use these steps to new browser profile.

I was looking at the instructions:

This profile circle next to settings is missing in my Brave. I don’t know when that happened because I have seen it before, but now it is gone.

This occurs when there is only one profile created. To create a new one, you can use this option in the main menu:

I see. I used to see the profile circle there before.

In any case, I created a new profile this morning and transferred all of my passwords, extensions, and bookmarks. So far, I have not experienced this issue today. I will keep an eye out and report back if this fixed the issue.

Please do let me know if/when the issue reappears.

Thank you

I am facing the same issue in android for over a month now. Whenever I open youtube the audio starts playing in the background. I searched for #global-media-controls but it was not there in brave://flags and that is why I am not able to proceed so please let me know what is the solution in android.

@Prkhar,
The issue you’re encountering is different than the one being discussed here.

If you want background audio to stop playing on YT for Android, go to Settings --> General --> Background video playback.
