YouTube suddenly asking me to "Install Youtube"

Hello again,

**I recently (last 5 days) replaced NordVPN with Guardian and not Guardian via the browser, but as its own install. And even though I have been loosing my mind with it, it resolved the issue I discussed here a couple of months ago… the YT videos no longer stalled at 59 seconds. It has been playing the videos just fine… until roughly a half hour ago!

I was on YT earlier with absolutely no problems. I left my comp for a while, putting it to sleep. When I came back and went to YT, my screen remained blank. It went to the url, but then just stopped… Nothing on my screen. And then I noticed a little animated icon in my URL bar. It read "install Youtube. What??? I went directly to the url, why would I ‘all of a sudden’ need to install it? I tried going to YT via Safari and it played with no problem. Is installing YT something new for Brave that JUST happened?! I can’t believe one issue was resolved only to have a completely new one show up a couple of days later. I only added Guardian a few days ago. Its a pain in the neck.**

Did the issue present with default Shields settings? (NO) It was working just fine a short while before. No issue visiting/viewing the site.

Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off? Yes. Just tried it. Turned the shields down and the site loaded, turned them back up and the site vanished. Didn’t do that two hours ago.

Is there a specific Shields configuration that causes the site to break? If so, tell us that configuration. (Unknown):

Does the site work as expected when using Chrome? Don’t know, don’t use chrome.

I think you’re confusing a feature with a separate issue you’re having. I’m on Windows 11 and have the “Install YouTube” button too, some websites just support that, including here where it says “Install Brave Community”, web apps are what they are.

Since YouTube is actively at war with Brave and any browser with adblocking, it’s clear the only issue you are actually experiencing is the adblocking itself.

Go here, then Update lists: brave://settings/shields/filters
Then go here, and update everything one by one: brave://components/

Close, then try again. (And yes, I wish Components had a single “Update All Components” button, super annoying the way it’s currently designed.)

But for now just ignore Install YouTube, that’s only because Brave sees that YouTube supports being installed as a “chromeless window”, aka a “Web App”.
