YouTube Ads not blocked Mar 2024 (using outdated Brave and Mac)

Briefly describe your issue:

As in the title—YouTube ads are not blocked/ still showing. I tried solutions I read here in various forum articles, including making sure I’m aggressively blocking, enabling cosmetic filtering… but I’m still seeing the ads on YT.

I know YT is pretty difficult to deal with, but I figured I’d mention it anyway. Most of the forum posts about it seem to be getting a bit older.

As a point of reference, UBlock Origin currently works to eliminate YT ads for me on this computer, on my (also old) version of FF… but apparently I can’t install it here on Brave browser—because Chrome doesn’t like my computer’s age.

So I tried to up the aggressiveness of Brave’s own settings, but that didn’t solve it for me.
.

What Operating System and Brave version are you using?

Mac OS 10.11.6 (I know!), Brave Version 1.40.1 Chromium: 101.0.4951.41 (Official Build) nightly (x86_64) (This version of Brave was recommended to me—I hope it’s what I should be using for my old MBP)

Which you know isn’t supported. It’s going to be missing a lot of the tools used by the browser for adblocking.

Umm, that and Google has removed uBO . MV3 changes hit and they have turned off updates and all

But you didn’t list the most important ones that we repeat regularly. For example: PSA: YouTube Adblock Detection

Sorry, I didn’t. Like I said this was recommended to me, because my poor computer’s so old.

I use UBlock Origin on Firefox and it seems very happy, as of 5 minutes ago anyway.

With apologies! I used the search here and I put as little into it as possible, just “youtube ads,” hoping to find every single post. I really hate posting to forums if I could have just DIYed a solution.

When I look at the Brave version info it claims it’s the latest…
It’s brand new today so obviously no added extensions or custom filters…
And after changing to aggressive and cosmetic filtering, I did indeed clear cookies & cache and restart Brave, as recommended in other forum posts that I found.

I’m off to check on those components—since it’s new today I’d guess it’s up to date but I’m glad to check that.

ETA: Brave Ad Block Resources Library doesn’t seem to be in the components, but everything else is up to date.

Thanks much.

@Kelly_E sorry if my quick answer came across a little abrupt. But yes, your El Capitan (10.11.6) hasn’t been supported for years. Such as you can see someone asking about it back in 2022 at HELP! What version of brave for Mac El Capitan 10.11.6

And even by the very beginning of 2024 newer versions of Brave were not available for anything older than 10.15, such as you can see at https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/18347246446733-Changes-to-macOS-desktop-browser-requirements

Brave can still fetch components updates and may block various ads. But it’s going to lack a lot of the necessary capabilities to do a good job, especially when you’re using a version of Brave from several years ago.
