Windows Hello Security dialog opens minimized to taskbar

When I sign into a website that uses Windows Hello in Windows 11, the Windows Security dialog where I enter my PIN is opening minimized to the task bar, instead of popping up on top of the browser where I expect it to be. This is a brand new installation of Windows 11 and Brave (I was using 10 before and the dialog appeared on top of the browser) Do you know how to fix this behavior? See screenshot of the dialog box on the taskbar:

Can you give an example of one such website?

Just to confirm, clicking this opens and lets you use it, right?

Not really. This is more or less one of the things people have to experiment with and try to reproduce before getting to answers.

While one could make assumptions, could you please provide the exact version of Brave you’re using?

Other things to consider:

  1. If you try this in a private window, does the same thing happen?
  2. If you were to try in Beta or Nightly, do you see the same behavior?
  3. If you try on Chrome, does it do the same?

nns.ic0.app is one site, another one is stripe.com. Yes, when I click on the dialog icon on the task bar, it comes up and I am able to enter my pin and sign in properly. I don’t know the version off the top of my head, but I just installed it yesterday so it is current. I have not tried in a private browsing window or any of the other things you said. I don’t really want to install Chrome or other programs… I was just curious if this was happening to others or just me? I will try in a private browsing window tomorrow.

@MDC okay, so I just tried both on my Windows 11 Pro and they opened right on the screen for me.

Just so you know, reasons I mentioned the steps I did:

  • Private = Opens a session with no cookies. Also all extensions are disabled by default.

  • Beta or Nightly = Just checks if it’s a version specific issue

  • Chrome would help see if it’s a Chromium problem

Usually would say to try a new profile as well, but skipped this time.

I just tried in a private browsing window in Brave, and the dialog still opened minimized on the taskbar. I’m on Home, not Pro, but I can’t imagine that would make a difference. Oh well, at least it flashes when it comes up to draw my attention to it. I also checked the version:

“Brave is up to date
Version 1.75.175 Chromium: 133.0.6943.54 (Official Build) (64-bit)”

I’m going to tag in @Mattches to see if he can perhaps check. I know at this time I don’t seem to be able to reproduce the issue.

On my end, I tested using Windows 10 and was unable to reproduce — dialog appeared on screen for me as expected.

Going to ask some team members to to test on their Win11 systems and see if they get the same behavior. Might be specific to Win 11 OS.

Looks like we can’t reproduce this on our end either. Not sure what exactly is causing the issue for you though.

I would be curious to know if this happens on other browsers as well. @MDC Would you be willing to download the Beta build of the browser to test (note that this will not overwrite your current installation — it will install as a separate browser) and see if you get the same behavior there?

If you could test in a non-Brave browser (Edge, Chrome, Chromium, etc.) that would also be helpful.

This is a fresh installation, not really looking to muck up the computer with programs I don’t need. It’s ok, I’ll just deal with it. I don’t know if it’s a Brave issue or Windows issue, but it isn’t critical, just a little annoying.

Understandable, although once the test is performed you can go ahead and uninstall/delete anything you don’t want. I’ll leave this thread open for now in case you change your mind.

Maybe I could try it in a sandbox environment… Another thing that could be causing it would be that I’m using an X-Lite version of Windows 11, so that’s a possibility.
