Widevine Content Decryption Module - Version: 0.0.0.0 Status - Update error and DRM Issues

Description of the issue:
It’s been a couple days since I’ve been getting a drm error on various sites, for example at first Spotify and then crunchyroll too with error DRM-0.

I’ve already tried to:

  1. Disable my extensions
  2. Tried shields up and shields down and allow all cookies
  3. Enabling and disabling widevine
  4. Deleting the folder C:\Users\me\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\WidevineCdm and then disabling and reenabling widevine (also this folder was empty for some reason)

In the end I’ve tried cheking the components but when I tried to check update of Widevine Content Decryption Module it said “Version: 0.0.0.0 Status - Update error” (everything else is Up-to-date)

Can anyone help me resolve this issue please it has become really annoying to not be able access sites.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Brave Version: v1.76.82

Additional Information:

Edition Windows 10 Pro
OS Build 19045.5608

@NekoHunter

Good, detailed bug report; thank you.

Probably, the cause of the bug, is one or more extensions that you have installed.

The cause could also be, the order in which you installed the extensions.

Your list of extensions (alphabetical order):

  • Dark Mode
  • Enhancer for YouTube
  • Foxified
  • Google Docs Offline
  • Keepa - Amazon Price Tracker
  • Return YouTube Dislike
  • SponsorBlock for YouTube - Skip Sponsorships
  • Tampermonkey
  • uBlock Origin
  • uBlock Origin Lite
  • Urban VPN Proxy
  • Volume Master

Please DISABLE and REMOVE all of those (EXCEPT: Urban VPN Proxyif you need that in order to connect to the Internet. IF you do not need that, then remove it, too.)

In a Brave Browser New Window, go to:

  • brave://settings/clearBrowserData Advanced tab

Time range: All time

ENABLE:

  • Cookies and other site data
  • Cached images and files

Click Clear data

Also, DISABLE Widevine.

Exit / Quit everything and Restart your computer.

After the restart, go to: https://brave.com/download/

Download the Brave Browser installer for Windows OS users, and run the installer. (You do not have to un-install the existing/previous version.)

After that installation, run Brave Browser and let Brave Browser just sit there, running for a few minutes.

Exit / Quit everything and Restart your computer.

Run Brave Browser. Take a look at the components list ← make a screenshot for reference.

Enable Widevine and wait a few minutes. Then take a look at the components list ← make a 2nd screenshot for reference.

IF the issue is solved, then methodically install your extensions . . . EXCEPT, you probably do not need one of the uBlock Origin extensions. Actually, you probably do not need uBlock Origin, because:

Brave Browser uses the same uBlock Origin lists. Make sure that:

  • EasyList Cookie
  • Fanboy’s Annoyances + uBO Annoyances

are enabled at brave://settings/shields/filters

I’ve followed all the steps in order but it still doesn’t work.
I’ve also tried with other browsers but brave is the only one giving me problems

@Mattches

What you have asked the Brave team about:

Play drm-controlled content - #44 by Mattches

is the same issue for @NekoHunter - notice the last screenshot at:

next to last component.

For anyone reading this, so you don’t have to read the entire linked post, the solution mentioned was to simply run brave as administrator but it’s not a permanent solution.

@NekoHunter just a heads up, according to the devs that isn’t a solution but is more of a workaround that can cause more issues.

There have been two different people who have given suggestions on what might need to be done. One suggestion is from the VP of Engineering at Brave and the second suggestion was user who had been highly active and helpful but got banned here on Brave Community and GitHub because they would often argue with people a lot (so on GitHub shows up as Ghost, which replaces username for banned or deleted accounts)

@Saoiray

Thanks for the links; good to know.

Yeah for this one I would just follow along with the issue @Saoiray opened previously as it is not specific only to the Widevine Component. Thread is active and it looks like the team is working on a fix. I will ping to see if I can get an update on where we stand here.
