Due to seemingly an update the search bar in the new tab page is at the bottom. I abhore this layout and I desperatly want to change it.
Is there a way to do so? Or can it only be changed by getting an extension to completely alter the look?

It’s there because many people requested it.
To turn it off, go into settings and choose not to have it. In your screenshot, you can see the Customize button, which is where you can make this change. This customize button is visible in the screenshot you shared, as below:
Clicking that and then on Search gives you:
You would then turn off the toggle to Show search widget on the new tab page.
Is it only able to be turned off or are there ways to change the position? Because if the latter is true I have not been able to find it
Just on and off. Brave doesn’t allow for repositioning anything on that page as they leave designated areas for the Sponsored Images (new tab page ads).
