Why is Brave sending me hourly third party push ads?

I receive ads from Brave roughly hourly via a pop-up in the top righthand corner. It’s mostly for things relating to cryptocurrency, but today I also had one for Pizza Hut. This can’t be right, surely? I downloaded Brave via an invite from Coinbase. Do I have some kind of strange third party version of Brave? It feels extremely spam-y which is the last thing I would expect from this product.

Thanks for reaching out. The ads are voluntary and by watching them you earn BAT, which can be later used (for example to tip your favorite creator).

Go to brave://rewards/ and turn off the ads.

Wow, thank you. I can’t believe I was so stupid.

I had read about these optional ads and had thought they would appear on web pages, not as a pop up like that.

I’ve turned it off and the pop-ups have stopped.
