I do not have ads/rewards enabled on my Brave browser…so I know this Metamask pop ad that appears is some type of scam that has bypassed your system.
Here is the address of this pop up scam:
chrome-extension://nkbihfbeogaeaoehlefnkodbefgpgknn/home.html#unlock
You did not state which platform you are using.
The address you posted is an extension, so the first thing you should do is remove it from brave://extensions/
If the extension re-appears or the pop-up continues, this might help
I do not want to remove Metamask from my Brave Browser though…I just want that extension pop up to stop showing up creating a new tab for itself every time I enter Brave browser. It is suspicious…it only started showing up today. It makes me not want to use Metamask on Brave browser anymore if I can’t trust it. How am I to know if I am using my Metamask…or the Metamask that just started magically showing up with it’s new tab today. I’d like for it to be fixed please.
Forgot to tell you my platform:
Edition | Windows 10 Home |
---|---|
Version | 22H2 |
Installed on | 2020-12-12 |
OS build | 19045.5608 |
Experience | Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19061.1000.0 |
I never know what to say when I see this in people’s screenshots. Pirated version of OS?
-
Have you run antivirus/malware scans?
-
Where did you install Metamask from?
-
Have you recently added any extensions or downloaded anything to your device? Especially torrents or “illegal” (pirated) materials?
It’s possible you have a scam thing you have installed. It’s not like it’s Brave popping it open on its own. Either what you see is being prompted by your Metamask extension or it’s some phishing thing you have added to your device that’s trying to get your information so they can drain your account. Regardless, it would be based on something you installed, even if unknowingly.
Obvious thing is just to look things over, do scans, and make the best judgment call you can. You can also try to look at things like in Brave’s settings → Get Started to see what you have for On Startup
to see if it’s set to open pages.
Might try a system restore. Thanks for the help…and no…I am not using a pirated version of Windows…I just never fully registered it…lol.
@The_New_Normal have to say in the past had talked to people who said it was a VM, others mentioned pirated, etc. But as you mentioned, some just use trial or never went through registration. But first thing that always pops into my mind is more the hesitation as I questioned, lol.
And yeah, wish I had an easier answer for your situation. As you said, something might have been installed or infected on your device. But that’s just a lot of snooping around a person has to do on their devices to know for sure. Thankfully you’re playing it safe. Would have sucked to find out it was some sort of malware or whatever and blindly trusting would end up having drained it.
Yes, I would be uncomfortable using any browser-based wallet, and would prefer a dedicated wallet app on a dedicated machine that is kept offline until needed. I would also recommend against storing recovery keys on a connected device.
That is why I recommended uninstalling the extension first, just to see if the pop-up continues (or some other malicious app on your system attempts to re-install the browser extension). That kind of thing happens on Windows more than any other platform. Some anti-malware/anti-virus apps should be able to determine where this is coming from. MalwareBytes/AdwCleaner are reputable products, but Microsoft Defender may also be capable of detecting this.
I do not know if any developers or managers are going to see your post, but in any case it is not Brave’s responsibility to stop you from downloading malware. I would recommend switching to an OS platform that is less infection-prone, or use a malware scanner with real-time detection capability so the infection is caught at the time of installation.
The app id of the Metamask extension in your screenshot is the same as the one in the Chrome store, so it appears that a malicious app on your machine is trying to leverage the legitimate Metamask extension for malicious purposes, as described in the malware removal instructions that i linked above. You should also remove any browser extensions that you do not recognize or do not remember installing.
Every copy of Windows will say this until you register (unless the installation media is pre-registered or corporate site-license stuff), but the OS is still functional for all practical purposes.
I just hid the extension from the brave browser it stoped the popoup tab. Extension is still here just hidden.
I had same problem. This is working for me. Thanks
