Why 1 BAT was sent to Brave Software International from Uphold account?

On January 25, 2025 Uphold sent me an email with the following:

Funds sent
You sent 1 BAT to Brave Software International.

No withdrawal fee was applied.

  1. My understanding is that no Uphold business partner has a permission to touch my Uphold account or send BATs to Brave Software International from Uphold account.

  2. This transaction is very confusing because according to Brave Help Center article
    (see https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360057017892-Does-Brave-share-data-with-custodial-partners-What-does-connecting-my-Brave-Rewards-profile-to-a-custodial-account-provider-mean-for-my-data)
when using the Auto-Contribute feature to support Brave creators with BAT from your custodial account, neither Brave nor your custodian can tell which specific creators you’re contributing to.

  3. Does this mean that more BATs will be transferred to Brave Software International from Uphold account without my knowledge and approval?

Please, explain the issue.

@yivanov seems you answered yourself there. You have Auto-Contribute enabled which would automatically reduce by 1 BAT each month unless you change the amount or disable it.

Yes, if you have Auto-Contribute enabled then it will happen every month.

Nope. You have it enabled in the settings and it let you know about it. If you choose not to turn it off, then it will continue. But you can easily disable it if you don’t want to contribute.

Auto-Contribute is disabled.

It seems that Brave Software International has an access to my Uphold account. This kind of access should be explained to the users.

  1. Where is an official Brave Software document, agreement or Help page
confirming that enabling Auto-Contribute on Brave Rewards page
will trigger automatic monthly payments of 1 BAT from personal crypto account
    to Brave Software International?

  2. It is very easy to add a warning message about the automatic BAT transfers
to the Auto-Contribute section on the Brave Reward page brave://rewards/.
This will be very user-friendly and transparent change.
The Reward Help pages and related documents should be updated accordingly.

  3. If Brave Software needs the user donations then it could add
the Donation button and/or Donation menu item in the Brave browser.
Again, this will be very user-friendly and transparent change.

  4. Brave Software could use its own AI to improve the Rewards page
especially Auto-Contribute section and related documentation.
Also Brave Software AI could generate a user agreement with detailed
description of BAT transfers from/to Brave Software International.

  5. At time of exponential AI advances the current Auto-Contribute section
looks like a hidden fee black box with no official information provided
    by Brave Software.

  6. Auto-Contribute option should be disabled by default for all use cases.

  7. 1 BAT for automatic monthly payments seems random.
Can Brave Software guarantee that it will not be 10 BAT or more in 2026?

Did you check all of your devices and profiles you have linked? It wouldn’t/shouldn’t take unless it’s enabled. And just a FYI, it’s enabled by default.

@yivanov big thing is you read. Just as Brave sends you to articles about how Rewards works, the Terms of Service, etc. But you and many others choose to ignore all of it. You also would see if you go to your settings and look around.

It is always important to read things you agree to and to check settings of things you install or use.

I never set any monthly payment amount. I don’t know what is a default amount after Brave installation.

Question.
I have one broken device with Brave installed. It is possible that Auto-Contribute on the broken device is enabled. Does it mean that I will contribute 1 BAT monthly even I can not use Brave browser on this device?

1 BAT, like shared. It’s been 1 BAT ever since Brave started.

As to not having enabled by default, it’s something we have complained about for a long time. I think they said in some of the upcoming changes that they would have it disabled by default.

Best thing to do would be to create a Rewards Support Ticket at https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360001302431 so someone who works at Brave can assist directly. They can try to help on figuring out which device it’s linked to and perhaps get it stopped. Depending on mood, they may even be willing to refund the BAT back to you, but they haven’t been doing that often these days.

Thanks a lot for your help.
