When opening the Brave Browser it shows up blank, freezes a little bit, then closes itself

@J.O.S

Suggestion: Exit / Quit everything and restart your Windows OS computer.

After the startup, create an additional Windows OS user account for the computer.

If / when prompted, be sure to: “Add a user without a Microsoft account.”

Restart the computer. (DO NOT switch between users; always restart, in order to change between user accounts.)

Sign in to the new user account. Make basic settings adjustments, as needed.

DO NOT set up anything like “Parental Controls.” Try to keep settings adjustments to a minimum.

The idea is to have as plain and simple, a Windows OS user account - for comparison tests re a troublesome application.

Locate the Brave Browser executable (“brave.exe”) and create a new Shortcut for it . . . placing that Shortcut on the new user’s Desktop.

The installed Brave Browser executable, brave.exe, is probably located in:

  • C:\Program Files\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe

DO NOT copy any settings nor setup nor profile from the other Windows OS user account.

TEST: Open Brave Browser

IF: Brave Browser keeps running, DO NOT add any extensions. Visit YouTube and run videos. Try to add burdens that occur by visiting websites.

Tried copying out local state from installed directory? The browser will recompile it with defaults.

Had a similar problem with flag corruption before.

You can also copy out specific things like bookmarks and reinstall. Brave just reads the files and corruption would cause a heap overflow.

@289wk I created another user account, but when I restart my computer, it automatically logs into the main account and doesn’t prompt me to choose an account. The only way for me to change to the other account is to sign out of the current account. Is there something that I’m doing wrong?

I have no idea what this means. If you think that this may help then please elaborate better.

@Mattches I don’t know if you saw my last post from last week on getting an update in the crash issue.

Also having this issue currently

Go to: (insert your user acount)
C:\Users\INSERTYOURUSERACCOUNT\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data

In that directory there is a “local state” file that holds flag details and specific configured settings. Cut that file out of the directory and paste it somewhere else. (desktop for example) Try loading the browser afterwards. if it loads, there is a issue with a flag, custom script, or setting you configured. If it doesn’t load replace the file back. (brave will recompile a new local state that you would replace if it doesn’t fix it)

Your bookmarks can be found: (insert your user account and profile name) Same copy and paste method.
‪C:\Users\INSERTYOURUSERACCOUNT\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\INSERTPROFILENAME

Trial and error till you find the cause. It’s all just coding in the end.
The bookmarks file will be viewable by notepad. Will have a tree structure but you can get the links if needed. Unsure whether it would be compatible between the different brave versions.

Thank you ItsPerryXD for the steps. When I opened Brave after cutting out the local state file, nothing changed.

However, I did find my bookmarks under the “Default” profile.
